Grammy Award-Winning Jamaican Dancehall, Ragga & Reggae Singer Known for "Bonafide Love"
Buju Banton Biography
Buju Banton, also known as Gargamel, is a Jamaican dancehall, ragga, and reggae singer who has been active in the music industry since 1987. His debut album, "Mr. Mention," which included hits like "Bonafide Love," paved the way for a successful career, leading to Banton breaking Bob Marley's record for the greatest number of #1 singles in a year in 1992.
Throughout his career, Banton has released numerous albums, each with its own distinct style and theme. His 1995 album "‘Til Shiloh" was particularly influential, blending conscious lyrics with a dancehall vibe. Banton also ventured into record production, establishing his own label, Gargamel Music, in 1996. His conscious music continued with albums such as "Inna Heights" and "Unchained Spirit." Banton's 2006 album "Too Bad" marked a return to a more dancehall-oriented style. His contributions to the music industry were recognized when he won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album for "Before the Dawn" at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards in 2011.
Following his release from McRae Correctional Institution in 2018, Banton embarked on The Long Walk to Freedom tour, performing at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica. He also released the song "Country for Sale," which topped the iTunes Reggae Chart. Banton's partnership with Roc Nation in 2019 led to new music, including his 13th studio album, "Upside Down 2020," featuring artists like John Legend and Pharrell. Banton has also made significant strides outside of the music industry, becoming one of the first Jamaican artists to release NFTs in 2021. His latest album, "Born for Greatness," was released in 2023.
