Grammy Award-Winning Jazz Saxophonist, Composer & Educator; Former Member of Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra; Co-Founder of Jazz Composers Collective
Ted Nash Biography
Ted Nash is a two-time Grammy Award-winning saxophonist, flutist, clarinetist, and composer whose career spans performance, conducting, composition, arranging, and education in the jazz industry. Nash was born into a family deeply rooted in jazz; his uncle, saxophonist Ted Nash, and his father, trombonist Dick Nash, were both recognized jazz soloists and Hollywood studio musicians who worked with Henry Mancini and Les Brown. Nash began his musical journey on piano at age seven, clarinet at 12, and alto saxophone at 13. By 16, he was performing with Lionel Hampton, followed by collaborations with Quincy Jones, Louie Bellson, and Don Ellis. After turning 18, Nash recorded his first album as a leader, "Conception," for Concord Jazz and moved to New York, where he joined the Gerry Mulligan Big Band.
Nash's work as a composer includes large-ensemble jazz pieces such as "Presidential Suite," inspired by political speeches on the theme of freedom. "Presidential Suite: Eight Variations on Freedom" received the Grammy Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album, and "Spoken at Midnight" from the same recording won Best Instrumental Composition. Nash also composed "Portrait in Seven Shades," a suite inspired by artists Chagall, Dali, Matisse, Monet, Picasso, Pollock, and Van Gogh, released by Jazz at Lincoln Center and performed by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. His recordings have appeared on best-of lists in The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Village Voice, and The Boston Globe.
Nash completed his tenure with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra after more than 25 years, performing on alto and soprano saxophone, flute, and clarinet, and contributing notable compositions. He is a co-founder of the New York-based Jazz Composers Collective, a nonprofit organization dedicated to presenting original works by composers in the jazz community. Nash has also participated in interdisciplinary projects, including "Transformation," a collaboration with actress Glenn Close.
As a recording artist, Nash has released 15 albums as a leader. His album "Tell the Birds I Said Hello: The Music of Herbie Nichols" features previously unheard compositions and re-workings of tunes first recorded by The Herbie Nichols Project. Nash continues to collaborate with bassist Ben Allison and guitarist Steve Cardenas, a trio with a long-standing creative partnership, and has released the album "Triological" on Sunnyside Records. In addition to his performance and recording career, Nash has taught and conducted workshops for more than four decades, including work with the Boyer College of Music and Dance at Temple University. Nash is recognized for his contributions to jazz as a saxophonist, composer, arranger, and educator.
