Restrictive Design is Bad for Business
Restrictive Design Is Hurting Your Business
Design tells people who belongs, sometimes before anyone says a word. Right now, a lot of businesses are telling whole groups of customers they don't.
Restrictive design rarely looks like a decision. It's one default body, one skin tone in the lighting plan, one way of moving through a space, one language, one perspective in the room. It feels efficient. It's actually sloppy, and it's a terrible business decision. The guest who can't use the shower has a reason not to come back. The attendee lit as an afterthought has a reason not to recommend the event. The customer who never sees themselves reflected has a reason to choose the company that did the work. Exclusion is a business decision, even when you didn't mean to make it.
The fix isn't designing for ""everyone,"" because everyone is a crowd and every one is a person. It's designing for every one, and every body, and inviting real people in while the decisions can still change.
In this talk, Annie Jean-Baptiste shares the Seen. Heard. Known. framework: how to spot the restrictive defaults built into your products, spaces and events, the four questions every team should be asking, and real examples of the costliest failures alongside the moves worth borrowing, from skin-tone testing to co-designing the whole journey, including opening the box. She makes the human case and the business case in the same conversation, because feeling seen, heard and known isn't a premium upgrade. It's the starting point.
What you'll take away:
- Why restrictive design is a business decision with a price: lost guests, lost referrals, lost customers
- How ""everyone"" hides the individual, and how to design for every one and every body instead
- The four questions: Who have we not considered? Who has to ask for help just to participate? Who is present in our images but absent from our decisions? What are we calling an edge case because we've never had to live it?
- Why global brands need local knowledge, not one headquarters perspective multiplied
- Borrowable moves: test across skin tones and real bodies, invite people in early and pay them, publish your access details
