Jessica A. Rickert, DDS Biography

Dr. Jessica A. Rickert, DDS, is a leader in American dentistry and a member of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation, directly descended from Chief Wahbememe (Whitepigeon). Rickert became the first female American Indian dentist in the United States after earning her Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. She was one of six women in a class of 140 students, marking the beginning of her efforts to advance diversity in the dental profession. Despite initial discouragement from her high school guidance counselor regarding her interest in medicine, Rickert completed both her undergraduate and dental degrees at the University of Michigan. She practiced dentistry for nearly five years before learning she was the first Native American woman in her field.

Throughout her career, Rickert has advocated for oral health equity in underserved communities. While in private practice in southeast Michigan, she developed a prevention program and introduced orthodontics at Detroit's Children's Aid Society dental clinic. As a board member of the Michigan Urban Indian Health Council, Rickert established an intertribal dental clinic in Detroit. She also supported the Grand Traverse Band of Chippewa and Ottawa Indians and the Saginaw Chippewas with dental screenings, clinic planning, and educational presentations. Rickert is a founding member of the Society of American Indian Dentists and has delivered presentations on oral health and diversity to a range of audiences.

Rickert is an author and public advocate for Native American health issues. She launched a dental advice column syndicated by American Indian newspapers and distributed in health clinics, an initiative recognized with the American Dental Association Access Award. She authored the book "Exploring Careers in Dentistry" and was profiled in the National Institutes of Health book, "The Power of Role Models: A Collection of Native American Role Models." Rickert received the William J. Gies Award for Achievement from the American Dental Education Association for her advocacy of diversity in dentistry and the need for more American Indian dentists.

Rickert was inducted into the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame. She has served as the Anishinaabe Dental Outreach Specialist for Delta Dental Insurance of Michigan, working to increase awareness of preventive dental services in underserved communities across the state, including all 12 Michigan reservations and Urban Indian Centers. Rickert continues to speak on diversity and oral health at conferences and educational institutions nationwide. She emphasizes the ongoing need for more American Indian dentists, noting that there are about 400 American Indian dentists in the United States, far below the number needed to achieve parity with the general population.
