Todd Beer Biography

Lieutenant Colonel Todd Beer is a retired U.S. Air Force pilot whose career included piloting Air Force One during the administrations of Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, as well as during the September 11 terrorist attacks. Beer holds the record for the most Air Force One flying hours of any pilot. His journey to the cockpit began after surviving a plane crash in high school, which initially deterred him from aviation. His basketball achievements led to an opportunity to play college basketball at the United States Air Force Academy, where he started more than 100 consecutive games and later completed flight school.

Following several assignments, Beer joined the Air Force's VIP Transport Wing, a position that requires a formal interview process. His time flying Air Force One placed him at the center of significant historical events, including Bush's surprise visit to Baghdad, an in-flight bomb threat, and transporting President Reagan's casket to his funeral. Beer’s firsthand accounts provide insight into the operational and security challenges faced by Air Force pilots.

On September 11, Beer was piloting Air Force One, having flown President Bush to Sarasota, Florida, the previous day. While giving a tour of the aircraft, Beer responded to the unfolding crisis, taking command as the youngest crew member when the situation escalated. This marked the first time Air Force One was escorted by fighter jets within the United States. Beer navigated the challenges of limited information and communication, focusing on the mission of returning the president to Washington safely.

Beer's Air Force career spanned more than two decades before he transitioned to piloting for Southwest Airlines. He is a keynote speaker who shares his experiences in aviation, leadership under pressure, and crisis management. Beer’s presentations draw on his journey from a student athlete with a fear of flying to an Air Force One pilot, offering audiences insights into preparation, dependability, and decision-making in high-stakes environments. His accounts provide a unique perspective on presidential travel, aviation security, and leadership during pivotal moments in American history.
