Astrophysicist & Distinguished Professor at University of California, Berkeley; Gruber Cosmology Prize Recipient; Science Communicator Known for "The Universe"
Alex Filippenko Biography
Alex Filippenko is a professor of astronomy and the Richard & Rhoda Goldman Distinguished Professor in the Physical Sciences at the University of California, Berkeley. Filippenko's research in astrophysics focuses on supernovae, active galaxies, black holes, gamma-ray bursts, and the expansion of the universe, utilizing optical, ultraviolet, and near-infrared wavelengths. He has authored nearly 1,100 research papers in astronomy and astrophysics, and his work has been recognized with several major prizes. Filippenko's group developed the Katzman Automatic Imaging Telescope, which has conducted one of the world's leading searches for relatively nearby supernovae, discovering more than 1,000 events.
Filippenko is the only scientist to have been a member of both the Supernova Cosmology Project and the High-z Supernova Search Team. These teams used observations of extragalactic Type Ia supernovae to discover the accelerating expansion of the universe and the existence of dark energy. Science Magazine credited the two international teams with the top "Science Breakthrough of 1998" for this research. The Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to the leaders of these groups—Saul Perlmutter, Brian Schmidt, and Adam Riess, who was a postdoctoral fellow in Filippenko's group at the time.
Filippenko was awarded the Gruber Cosmology Prize, which he shares with Ken'ichi Nomoto and Stanford Woosley, for transforming the understanding of supernovae into a quantitative and predictive framework. His research in optical spectroscopy demonstrated that many core-collapse supernovae result from massive stars with stripped envelopes, helped establish the Type IIn subclass, identified progenitors of some supernovae, revealed the aspherical nature of many supernovae, and showed heterogeneity among Type Ia supernovae—key to calibrating them for accurate distance measurements. Filippenko has also been elected to the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and shared the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics. He received the California Institute of Technology Distinguished Alumni Award.
In addition to his research, Filippenko is recognized as a science communicator in astronomy and astrophysics. He has received teaching accolades at the University of California, Berkeley, and has been voted "Best Professor" on campus multiple times. Filippenko was awarded the U.S. National Professor of the Year Award, sponsored by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. He has received the Astronomical Society of the Pacific's Richard H. Emmons Award for undergraduate teaching and the American Astronomical Society's Education Prize. Filippenko produced five astronomy video courses with "The Great Courses," coauthored an award-winning astronomy textbook in five editions, and appears in more than 120 TV documentaries, including about 50 episodes of "The Universe" series. He also received the Carl Sagan Prize for Science Popularization. Filippenko has given more than 2,000 public lectures and presentations, contributing to public understanding of cosmology, supernovae, and the universe.
