International Economist
Adam Posen Biography
Adam S. Posen is an international economist recognized for his expertise in global monetary policy, financial stability, and economic governance. Posen has served as president of the Peterson Institute for International Economics, contributing to research and public policy on monetary and fiscal policies in the G-20, European integration since the adoption of the euro, China-U.S. economic relations, and approaches to financial recovery and stability. He received both his BA and PhD from Harvard University.
Posen was among the first economists to address the political foundations of central bank independence and to analyze Japan's Great Recession as a failure of macroeconomic policy. While at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, he co-authored "Inflation Targeting: Lessons from the International Experience" with Ben Bernanke, Thomas Laubach, and Frederic Mishkin. He also wrote the book "Restoring Japan's Economic Growth" and the analysis "The Realities and Relevance of Japan's Great Recession." In Foreign Affairs, he published the article "The Price of Nostalgia: America's Self-Defeating Economic Retreat," which examines the U.S. retreat from globalization.
Posen was appointed by the UK Chancellor of the Exchequer to serve a three-year term as an external voting member of the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee, where he advocated for an activist policy response to the financial crisis, led the committee into quantitative easing, and forecast global inflation developments. He has consulted for the International Monetary Fund and several U.S. government agencies, as well as the British and Japanese Cabinet Offices, and has been a visiting scholar at central banks in Europe, East Asia, and the U.S. Federal Reserve System.
During Posen's presidency, the Peterson Institute has been recognized as a leading independent think tank in international economics, receiving top rankings from Prospect Think Tank Awards and the Global Go To Think Tank Index. Under his leadership, the institute expanded to include 42 resident and nonresident fellows and increased its endowment by 50 percent. He served seven terms as a member of the Panel of Economic Advisers to the U.S. Congressional Budget Office. Posen delivered the inaugural Adam Smith Distinguished Lecture at the University of Glasgow and was named a CEPR Distinguished Fellow.
Posen was made an honorary Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for his services to British economic policy. The Government of Japan conferred upon him the Order of the Rising Sun for his achievements in advancing U.S.-Japanese economic relations and Japanese economic policy globally. He is frequently cited in the press, appears on Bloomberg, CNBC, BBC, and NPR, and his commentary is published in leading newspapers. He has received major grants and research fellowships from the American Academy in Berlin, Brookings Institution, Bank of England, European Commission, Ford Foundation, Sloan Foundation, and the U.S. National Science Foundation.
