Cartoonist, Writer & Graphic Memoirist; Author of "Flying Couch"; Contributor to The New Yorker
Amy Kurzweil Biography
Amy Kurzweil is an American cartoonist, writer, and educator whose work explores the intersection of visual art, personal history, and contemporary culture. Kurzweil holds a Bachelor of Arts from Stanford University and a Master of Fine Arts from The New School. Initially pursuing fiction, she shifted to cartooning while working on her first book, discovering that drawing enabled her to convey the emotional depth of her grandmother's story.
Kurzweil draws cartoons for The New Yorker, and her writing, comics, and cartoons have appeared in The Verge, The New York Times Book Review, Longreads, Literary Hub, and WIRED, among other publications. She is the author of the graphic memoir "Flying Couch," which was named a New York Times Editor's Choice and a Kirkus Best Memoir. The book traces her family's history, focusing on her grandmother, a Holocaust survivor; her mother, a psychologist; and herself as a young woman. "Flying Couch" originated as Kurzweil's senior thesis at Stanford and evolved over eight years of research, writing, and illustration.
Her second graphic memoir, "Artificial: A Love Story," examines how she and her father, futurist and technologist Ray Kurzweil, used artificial intelligence to connect with the grandfather she never met, an Austrian conductor, pianist, and music educator. "Artificial: A Love Story" was recognized as a best book by NPR, Kirkus, and The New Yorker. Kurzweil's TED Talk, "Time Traveling With AI to Connect With Lost Loved Ones," has reached a wide audience, reflecting her engagement with technology, memory, and storytelling.
Kurzweil has received recognition across multiple disciplines, including the Overseas Press Club Cartoon Award for her essay, "A Palestinian, an Israeli, and a Path to Peace." Her work has been nominated for a Reuben Award and an Ignatz Award for "Technofeelia," her four-part graphic series with The Believer Magazine. She has been a Berlin Prize Fellow with The American Academy in Berlin and a Shearing Fellow with the Black Mountain Institute, and has received fellowships from MacDowell and Yaddo.
As an educator, Kurzweil has taught writing and comics at Parsons The New School for Design and the Fashion Institute of Technology, and teaches a monthly online cartooning class. Her work addresses themes of memory, identity, technology, and loss, establishing her as a prominent figure in graphic memoir, comics, and the evolving relationship between art and artificial intelligence.
