Scott Gilmore is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Building Markets. Prior to this, Scott was a Canadian diplomat, his last position being the Deputy Director for South Asia, working on Canada’s integrated defence, development and diplomatic assistance to Afghanistan.
In 2001 Scott was the Deputy National Security Advisor of the United Nations peacekeeping mission in East Timor (UNTAET) responsible for the creation of the defence department, as well as the development of the national economic security policy. In 1998, he was posted to the Canadian Embassy in Indonesia where he covered the collapse of the Suharto government and the outbreak of regional unrest.
Scott studied International Commerce at the University of Alberta and earned a M.Sc. at the London School of Economics. He sits on the Advisory Boards of Canada 2020 and the Samara Project. Scott was named one of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40 in 2009, and he was awarded one of 2010’s Skoll Prizes for Social Entrepreneurship. He lives in Ottawa with his wife Catherine McKenna, founder of Canadian Lawyers Abroad, and their three children.
