Hall of Fame MLB Pitcher & Baseball Analyst; Two-Time Cy Young Award Winner; World Series MVP
Tom Glavine Biography
Tom Glavine is recognized as one of the most consistent pitchers in Major League Baseball, building a Hall of Fame career over more than two decades. Known for his control, ability to change speeds, and strategic pitching, Glavine excelled during an era marked by the rise of power hitters and increased offensive production. Drafted in the fourth round of the NHL entry draft by the Los Angeles Kings, Glavine opted for baseball when the Atlanta Braves selected him in the second round of the amateur draft. He began his career with the Braves, quickly establishing himself as a key figure in the team's pitching rotation.
Glavine's breakout season occurred when he posted a 20-11 record with a 2.55 earned-run average and led the league with nine complete games, earning the National League Cy Young Award. Throughout the 1990s, Glavine played a central role in the Braves' dominance, recording five seasons with 20 or more wins and accumulating 164 victories during the decade, second only to teammate Greg Maddux. A highlight of his career came in the World Series, where he pitched eight scoreless innings in Game 6 against Cleveland, securing the championship for Atlanta and earning the World Series MVP title. Glavine continued his success with consistent performances, including another Cy Young Award following a 20-6 campaign.
Glavine relied on precise control and a mix of pitches, often starting with his circle changeup and alternating with fastballs to keep hitters off balance. After his tenure with the Braves, Glavine reached his 300th career win with the New York Mets, becoming the 23rd pitcher and only the fifth left-hander to achieve the 300-win milestone. His career statistics include a 305-203 record, a 3.54 ERA, and 2,607 strikeouts. Glavine was named to 10 All-Star games, received Cy Young Award votes in six seasons, won four Silver Slugger Awards as a pitcher, started 682 games (ranking 12th all-time), and his 305 victories are fourth all-time among left-handed pitchers.
Glavine was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility, joining Greg Maddux and longtime Braves manager Bobby Cox. He was also elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame's Board of Directors. The Braves retired Glavine's number 47, honoring his impact on the franchise.
Following his playing career, Glavine has contributed to baseball as a guest commentator for SportSouth and Fox Sports South, providing analysis and insight into the game. He has also been active in charitable initiatives, supporting children's cancer charities such as the Rally Foundation's Money in the Mitt 300 Challenge and CURE Childhood Cancer, as well as the Operation Backpack program for Volunteers of America and the National Sports Committee of the Leukemia Society of America. Glavine is the author of "None But The Braves" and "Baseball For Everybody," sharing his knowledge and experience with a broad audience interested in baseball history and pitching strategy.
