Ruth E. Carter

Ruth E. Carter is a celebrated American costume designer. Her accomplishments include winning two Academy Awards for Best Costume Design for "Black Panther" and "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever," making history as the first African-American to receive this honor. Her recognition extends beyond the Oscars, with five nominations in total for her work on films such as "Malcolm X," "Amistad," and "Sinners". Furthermore, Carter has contributed to over 50 feature films, including "Do the Right Thing," "The Butler," and "Selma".

With her significant contributions to the field, Carter was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2021 and received the Career Achievement Award from the Costume Designers Guild Awards in 2019. Her work has not only been acclaimed but also exhibited. In 2023, the North Carolina Museum of Art showcased over sixty of Carter's original costumes, providing a visual testament to her career. Her designs often incorporate elements of Afrofuturism and traditional African garments, a signature style that was prominently displayed in "Black Panther".
