Jeffrey Seller is a theatrical producer known for his significant impact on Broadway. Seller produced the Tony Award-winning musicals "Rent," "Avenue Q," "In the Heights," and "Hamilton." His productions have received 22 Tony Awards, including four for Best Musical, and his Broadway shows and tours have grossed more than $4.6 billion, reaching over 43 million attendees. Seller is the only producer to have mounted two Pulitzer Prize-winning musicals: "Hamilton" and "Rent."
After moving to New York City following his college graduation, Seller began his career writing press releases before working for Barry and Fran Weissler, where he learned to book touring shows and negotiate contracts. He produced musicals and plays at night, developing relationships with artists, composers, and lyricists. Producing "Rent," written by Jonathan Larson, marked a turning point in Seller's career. Alongside business partner Kevin McCollum, Seller introduced Broadway's first rush ticket policy during the production of "Rent," aiming to keep the show accessible to young audiences and artists. The popularity of rush tickets led Seller and McCollum to create Broadway's first lottery ticket policy, offering $20 tickets to lottery winners and maintaining accessibility for younger theatergoers.
Seller's collaboration with Lin-Manuel Miranda began with "In the Heights" and continued with "Hamilton." After an early performance of songs from "Hamilton" at Jazz at Lincoln Center, Seller expressed his commitment to producing the show. "Hamilton" earned 11 Tony Awards from 16 nominations, including Best Musical, marking Seller's fourth Tony Award. Seller also brought the "Hamilton" production to Australia, where it achieved record-breaking ticket sales. Beyond "Hamilton," Seller played a key role in the revival of Sondheim's "Sweeney Todd" starring Josh Groban.
Seller has also become recognized as a storyteller. His memoir, "Theater Kid," published by Simon & Schuster, recounts his journey from growing up in suburban Detroit to moving to New York and reshaping Broadway. In the memoir, Seller discusses his experiences on Broadway and coming out during the AIDS epidemic. In public appearances, Seller shares insights into his personal journey, the impact of the arts, and behind-the-scenes stories from his career as a Broadway producer.
