Bakari Sellers

Bakari Sellers is a nationally recognized attorney, CNN political commentator, and two-time New York Times bestselling author whose career spans law, politics, and civil rights advocacy. The son of civil rights leader Cleveland Sellers, Bakari Sellers entered Morehouse College at age 16, earned a Bachelor of Arts in African-American studies, and received a Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law. Drawing on a family legacy of activism and a commitment to justice, Sellers has built a career that bridges the courtroom, government, and national media.

Sellers made history at age 22 by defeating a 26-year incumbent to become the youngest member of the South Carolina state legislature and the youngest African American elected official in the nation. He served in the South Carolina House of Representatives for nearly a decade, focusing on issues of equity and access, before winning the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor of South Carolina. During his time in elected office, Sellers also served on President Barack Obama's South Carolina steering committee during the presidential election, establishing his presence within the Democratic Party.

Since joining CNN as a political commentator, Sellers has provided analysis on race, law, elections, and social justice. He leads the strategic communication, public affairs, and diversity, equity, and inclusion consulting practice at Strom Law Firm in Columbia, South Carolina. Sellers also hosts "The Bakari Sellers Podcast" on the Ringer Podcast Network, where he discusses politics, race, sports, and culture.

As an author, Sellers has explored political and social issues through works including "My Vanishing Country," a memoir and historical analysis of America's Black working class, and "The Moment: Thoughts on the Race Reckoning That Wasn't and How We All Can Move Forward Now," which examines national politics and policies affecting Black communities. He is also the author of the children's book "Who Are Your People?," which introduces young readers to the history and significance of the Black community in America.

Sellers' work has been recognized by Time 40 Under 40 in Politics, Ebony Power 100, and The Root 100 as one of the most influential African Americans under 40. He has received an honorary doctorate and recognition as a best-in-state lawyer. Sellers is a frequent keynote speaker at universities, civic organizations, and national conventions, including the Democratic National Convention, bringing firsthand political experience and legal expertise to discussions on civil rights, public policy, and social justice.
