Charles Graeber Biography

Charles Graeber is an award-winning journalist, a New York Times bestselling author, and one of three authors to file a class-action lawsuit for copyright violation against the AI tech company Anthropic, for stealing their books to create their AI chatbot, Claude; the resulting $1.5B settlement this year is the largest in U.S. copyright history. His New York Times opinion piece was a sobering look at the outcome of that case and his entre as a consultant and keynote speaker on the future of A.I. and the arts. As a former governor of the Overseas Press Club and current board member of The Author’s Guild, he works on the front lines, pushing congress to confirm the copyright protections written into Article 1 of the Bill of Rights.

His longform narrative nonfiction has been anthologized in collections including "The Best American Crime Writing," "The Best American Science Writing," "The Best American Business Writing," "The Best Technology Writing," "The Best of 10 Years of National Geographic Adventure," "Flights of Fancy: Extraordinary Writing About Birds," 'The Best of 20 years of Wired," and "The Best American Magazine Writing," as selected by the American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) and The Columbia University School of Journalism. His work has also been honored with An Overseas Press Club award for Outstanding International Journalism, a New York Press Club prize for spot reporting, an Edgar Award nomination and several National Magazine Award nominations for feature writing.

His non-fiction book, "The Good Nurse," is a New York Times bestseller and the basis of a major motion picture of the same name. His book "The Breakthrough; Immunotherapy and the Race to Cure Cancer" is considered required reading for patients and doctors alike, and was shortlisted for the Medical Book of the Year award by the British Medical Association. He's also a professional cartoonist, with work appearing in The Wall Street Journal, Reader's Digest, the Times of London, and many others.
