Award-Winning Journalist & Nonfiction Author; Author of "The Good Nurse"; Plaintiff in Landmark AI Copyright Case; Board Member at The Author's Guild
Charles Graeber Biography
Charles Graeber is an award-winning journalist, a New York Times bestselling author, and one of three authors to file a class-action lawsuit for copyright violation against the AI tech company Anthropic, for stealing their books to create their AI chatbot, Claude; the resulting $1.5B settlement this year is the largest in U.S. copyright history. His New York Times opinion piece was a sobering look at the outcome of that case and his entre as a consultant and keynote speaker on the future of A.I. and the arts. As a former governor of the Overseas Press Club and current board member of The Author’s Guild, he works on the front lines, pushing congress to confirm the copyright protections written into Article 1 of the Bill of Rights.
His longform narrative nonfiction has been anthologized in collections including "The Best American Crime Writing," "The Best American Science Writing," "The Best American Business Writing," "The Best Technology Writing," "The Best of 10 Years of National Geographic Adventure," "Flights of Fancy: Extraordinary Writing About Birds," 'The Best of 20 years of Wired," and "The Best American Magazine Writing," as selected by the American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) and The Columbia University School of Journalism. His work has also been honored with An Overseas Press Club award for Outstanding International Journalism, a New York Press Club prize for spot reporting, an Edgar Award nomination and several National Magazine Award nominations for feature writing.
His non-fiction book, "The Good Nurse," is a New York Times bestseller and the basis of a major motion picture of the same name. His book "The Breakthrough; Immunotherapy and the Race to Cure Cancer" is considered required reading for patients and doctors alike, and was shortlisted for the Medical Book of the Year award by the British Medical Association. He's also a professional cartoonist, with work appearing in The Wall Street Journal, Reader's Digest, the Times of London, and many others.
He has appeared on "60 Minutes," "Fresh Air," "Marketplace," "Q," "CBS This Morning" with Charlie Rose and Gayle King, "The Joy Behar Show," Dana Perino on FOX, C-SPAN, PBS, NPR, Bloomberg, Book TV, Al Jazeera, Bloomberg, and hundreds of other media outlets. He was featured as one of the plaintiffs in TIME's 100 Most Influential People in AI 2026 alongside Andrea Bartz and Kirk Wallace Johnson for their landmark copyright class-action lawsuit against Anthropic.

A.I. With Ethics: Save the Robots!
Adapted from his influential New York Times opinion piece and based on his 2.5 year quest to bring A.I. giant to account for stealing the books of hundreds of thousands of authors in order to create their for-profit product, the A.I. chatbot Claude.
Charles Graeber takes us through the surprising development of this precedent setting case, the first by creators to challenge tech giants, how Anthropic and other companies discovered that LLMs need books and how they went about stealing them, and how a secret program code named “Project Panama” served as a legal figleaf for intellectual property theft on an industrial scale. Bartz V Anthropic changed the future of A.I.and writing, for good and bad, and Graeber fulles his experience into insight as to what’s next for tech and the arts.
A celebrated Wired journalist and science writer, Graber is pro-A.I., but anti stealing, and believes the path currently being blazed by Silicon Valley could be better considered, for better outcomes; how instead of being adversaries in a courtroom, technology leadership could partner with the authors and creators their corporations rely upon, and the creative material that LLM’s need to train on. Graeber delivers his front-line experience behind the headlines, and a passionate entreaty for saving the A.I.s from having nothing to eat but their own outputs, by saving the authors who feed them. Ultimately any future is possible; Graeber inspires listeners with a vision of a new golden age, where tech trillions support culture, not as mere philanthropy but as a necessity, and science and the arts advance together for mutual benefit, and the betterment of both robot and human society.

The Serial Killer and The Hospital: A Case Study in Doing a Good Job While Failing To Do Good
An entertaining ethical parable pulled directly from ten years of research and direct access to the most prolific serial killer in history, a nurse who killed perhaps 400 patients in his 16 year career, but was always allowed to move on to a new job by administrators that seemed willingly blind to the danger their sociopathic employee posed.
