John Slattery Biography

John Slattery is an American actor and director whose career spans theater, television, and film. A graduate of the Catholic University of America with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Slattery was a prolific stage actor throughout the 1990s before transitioning to screen acting. In theater, he appeared on Broadway in the Pulitzer Prize–winning "Rabbit Hole," for which he was nominated for a Drama League Award; the Broadway revival of "Betrayal"; and opposite Nathan Lane in Neil Simon's "Laughter on the 23rd Floor." His off-Broadway credits include the original production of "Three Days of Rain," which earned him the LA Drama Critics Award and a Drama Desk nomination.

Television writer and producer Matthew Weiner noticed Slattery's performance in "Rabbit Hole" and invited him to audition for the period drama "Mad Men." Slattery played Roger Sterling, a partner at the fictional ad agency Sterling Cooper, earning four consecutive nominations for the Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. He also won two Critics' Choice Television Awards and two Screen Actors Guild Awards for the role. Beyond acting, Slattery directed five episodes of "Mad Men" and three episodes of the Netflix romance series "Love."

In film, Slattery is known for his portrayal of Howard Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, appearing in "Iron Man 2," "Ant-Man," "Captain America: Civil War," and "Avengers: Endgame." He also played journalist Ben Bradlee Jr. in the Academy Award-winning drama "Spotlight." The "Spotlight" cast received the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, the Robert Altman Award at the Independent Spirit Awards, a Gotham Independent Film Award for Ensemble Performance, and a Satellite Award for Best Cast in a Motion Picture.

Slattery directed his first feature film, "God's Pocket," which he co-wrote with Alex Metcalf. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was distributed by IFC Films. After "Mad Men," Slattery continued to appear regularly on television, with roles in the Netflix "Wet Hot American Summer" prequel series, HBO's "Veep," the FX miniseries "Mrs. America," and "The Good Fight." He portrayed Burton C. Andrus in the film "Nuremberg" and starred in the comedy "Vladimir" alongside Rachel Weisz and Leo Woodall. Slattery's work in drama, comedy, and directing has established him as a versatile figure in the entertainment industry, with significant contributions to television, film, and theater.
