John Lithgow Biography
John Lithgow is recognized as a versatile performer in American entertainment, with a career spanning more than five decades across theater, film, and television. Lithgow studied at Harvard University, graduating magna cum laude, and continued his training at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art on a Fulbright scholarship. This classical foundation supported his extensive work in acting, writing, and the performing arts.
Lithgow's stage career includes a Tony Award for his Broadway debut in David Storey's "The Changing Room," followed by more than 20 Broadway appearances, five additional Tony nominations, another Tony Award, four Drama Desk Awards, and induction into the Theatre Hall of Fame. He earned a second Tony for Best Actor in a Musical for "Sweet Smell of Success." His portrayal of Roald Dahl in the West End production of Mark Rosenblatt's "Giant" at the Royal Court Theatre earned him the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor, and he received a Tony nomination for his performance on Broadway.
In film, Lithgow's breakthrough role was as a transgender former football star in "The World According to Garp," earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He received a second consecutive Oscar nomination for his role as Sam Burns in "Terms of Endearment." On television, Lithgow starred as Dick Solomon in the sitcom "3rd Rock from the Sun," winning three Primetime Emmy Awards for Best Actor in a Comedy Series. He also won Emmy Awards for his performances in "Dexter" and "The Crown." Lithgow's film credits include roles in "Killers of the Flower Moon," directed by Martin Scorsese, and "Conclave," directed by Edward Berger.
Beyond acting, Lithgow is an accomplished author and public intellectual. His memoir, "Drama: An Actor's Education," and the "Dumpty Trilogy" of political satire books have appeared on the New York Times non-fiction bestseller list. He has written several best-selling children's picture books and received four Grammy nominations for his children's recordings. Lithgow served as co-chair of the Commission on the Arts of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, contributing to reports on America's creative workforce and arts education, and was involved in the PBS documentary "Art Happens Here."
Throughout his career, Lithgow has received numerous accolades, including two Tony Awards, seven Emmy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, three Actor Awards, an American Comedy Award, four Drama Desk Awards, and nominations for two Academy Awards and four Grammy Awards. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and is a member of the American Theater Hall of Fame. Lithgow continues to be recognized for his contributions to acting, writing, and arts advocacy.
