Michael A. Hudson Biography

Michael Hudson is a Distinguished Research Professor of Economics at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, and a researcher at the Levy Economics Institute at Bard College. He also holds a professorship at Peking University in China. Before transitioning to research and consulting, Hudson applied flow-of-funds and balance-of-payments statistics to forecast interest rates, capital markets, and real estate markets for Chase Manhattan Bank and the Hudson Institute. At Scudder, Stevens & Clark, he established the world's first Third World sovereign debt fund, which became the second best performing international fund the following year. He later served as an advisor to the United Nations Institute for Training and Research.

A Wall Street financial analyst and Distinguished Research Professor of Economics, Hudson has written or edited more than ten books on international finance, economic history, and the history of economic thought. He has served as an economic advisor to the U.S., Canadian, Mexican, and other governments, as well as to United Nations agencies and international corporations. The Financial Times listed Hudson as one of six economists who predicted the 2008 economic crisis. He also served as chief economic advisor for Dennis Kucinich's presidential campaign. His academic work focuses on financial history and the history of debt, land tenure, and related economic institutions from the Sumerian period, antiquity, and feudal Europe to the present.

Hudson is the author of "Super-Imperialism: The Economic Strategy of American Empire," "'and forgive them their debts'," "J is for Junk Economics," "Killing the Host," "The Bubble and Beyond," and "Trade, Development and Foreign Debt," among others. His work "Super-Imperialism" was the first book to describe the global economic impact after the United States moved off the gold standard, establishing a paper Treasury-bill standard. His books have been translated into Japanese, Chinese, German, Spanish, and Russian.

Hudson's works include "The Destiny of Civilization: Finance Capitalism, Industrial Capitalism or Socialism" and "The Collapse of Antiquity," part of his trilogy on the history of debt. "The Collapse of Antiquity" examines how interest-bearing debt contributed to the rise of rentier oligarchies in classical Greece and Rome, leading to economic polarization, austerity, revolts, wars, and the eventual collapse of Rome into serfdom and feudalism. He has been named one of the Founding Professors at the Shanghai School of Marxist Studies, where the Government Publishing House has translated his major books into Chinese.

As president of the Institute for the Study of Long-Term Economic Trends, Hudson has written reports and delivered presentations on balance of payments, financial bubbles, land policy, and financial reforms for U.S. and international clients and governments. He organized the International Scholars Conference on Ancient Near Eastern Economies and has co-edited the proceedings of six academic conferences on the evolution of property, credit, labor, and accounting since the Bronze Age. Hudson regularly gives speeches, lectures, and presentations worldwide for a range of academic, economic, and political groups.
