Legendary Country Music Duo & Songwriting Icons; Best-Selling Country Duo in History; Two-Time Grammy Award Winners
Brooks & Dunn Biography
Brooks & Dunn, comprised of Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn, are recognized as a leading duo in country music. The partnership brought together two vocalists and songwriters with distinct artistic styles, resulting in a significant impact on the genre. When Arista Records Nashville executive Tim DuBois encouraged Brooks and Dunn to form a duo, both artists contributed more than a decade of performing and songwriting experience. Dunn is known for his soulful vocal delivery, while Brooks is noted for his energetic stage presence. Although neither achieved major solo success prior to their collaboration, their combined approach blended honky tonk with danceable rhythms and pop-influenced ballads.
Brooks & Dunn's debut album, "Brand New Man," produced four consecutive singles—"My Next Broken Heart," "Neon Moon," and "Boot Scootin' Boogie"—that reached number one on the country music charts, marking a milestone as the first duo or group to achieve this feat with their initial releases. The single "Boot Scootin' Boogie" played a role in reviving line dancing in the United States, establishing Brooks & Dunn as influential figures in country music culture. Nearly all of their studio albums are certified platinum or higher by the Recording Industry Association of America, with "Brand New Man" achieving sextuple-platinum status. Subsequent albums such as "Hard Workin' Man," "Waitin' on Sundown," "Steers & Stripes," and "Red Dirt Road" maintained their prominence on the charts through the 1990s and 2000s.
Brooks & Dunn became the best-selling country duo in history, earning 41 Top Ten hits, including 20 number ones, and performing in arenas for two decades. The duo received the Country Music Association Vocal Duo of the Year award every year except one between 1992 and 2006. They were the first duo to win the Entertainer of the Year award from both the Country Music Association and the Academy of Country Music. Their songs "Hard Workin' Man" and "My Maria" won the Grammy Award for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. With more than 80 industry awards, including two Grammy Awards and seven American Music Awards, Brooks & Dunn hold the record as the most awarded act in Academy of Country Music and Country Music Association history.
In response to a mid-career downturn, Brooks & Dunn collaborated with producer Mark Wright and focused on songwriting, resulting in albums "Steers & Stripes" and "Red Dirt Road." These albums produced enduring hits such as "Ain't Nothing 'Bout You," "Only in America," and "Red Dirt Road." The song "Only in America" was featured in presidential campaigns for both George W. Bush and Barack Obama, reflecting the broad appeal of their music. Brooks & Dunn also hosted the Country Music Association's network awards show for several years.
Following their farewell "Last Rodeo" tour, Brooks and Dunn pursued solo projects before reuniting for a series of concerts with Reba McEntire in Las Vegas. The album "Reboot" featured collaborations with contemporary country artists, debuting at number one on Billboard's Top Country Albums. Brooks & Dunn were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and continued to release new music, including "Reboot II," while receiving ongoing recognition such as the CMA Award for Vocal Duo of the Year. Their influence endures among both longtime fans and new audiences in the country music industry.
