Suzan Song Biography
Dr. Suzan Song is a psychiatrist, medical anthropologist, and global mental health expert whose career encompasses work in conflict zones, refugee camps, corporate environments, and clinical practice. Song is double board-certified in adult and child/adolescent psychiatry, having completed her general psychiatry residency at Harvard Medical Centers and her pediatric psychiatry fellowship at Stanford University. She earned a Ph.D. in social-behavioral medicine from the University of Amsterdam, where her research focused on intergenerational stress and resilience among former child soldiers in Burundi. Song also holds a Master of Public Health in health policy from Harvard School of Public Health.
Song’s career centers on building resilience in individuals and communities affected by adversity, including survivors of human trafficking, torture, forced displacement, and high-performing professionals. She has led field and policy work across 15 countries, working with former child soldiers in Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Burundi, and with displaced families in conflict-affected regions of sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe. Song has also worked with survivors of the Monterey Park mass shooting and unaccompanied minors at the U.S. southern border. She served as an adviser to the U.S. State Department's Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons and as a mass violence incident adviser with the U.S. Department of Justice's Office for Victims of Crime. Song has provided Congressional briefings on trauma-informed policy, child protection, and human trafficking, and has advised organizations including UNICEF, UNHCR, International Rescue Committee, and Save the Children.
As a professor of psychiatry at George Washington University and founder of the Global Collective Institute, Song established the Global Child and Family Mental Health program at Boston Children's Hospital. She co-edited "Child and Adolescent Refugee Mental Health: A Global Perspective" and has received awards from the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists, the American Psychiatric Association, the National Institutes of Mental Health, and Harvard University. Her book, "Why We Suffer and How We Heal: Using Narrative, Ritual, and Purpose to Flourish Through Life's Challenges," presents a framework for navigating instability and transforming suffering, drawing on her clinical and humanitarian experience.
Song has delivered keynote addresses at organizations such as Google, Harvard, Stanford, Nike, Toyota, and multiple U.S. federal agencies, providing practical tools for navigating uncertainty, building resilience, and leading through sustained strain. Her expertise in trauma, global mental health, and resilience informs her work with diverse audiences confronting change, adversity, and the process of healing.
