Canadian LGBTQ Activist, Actor, Author & First Openly Transgender Professional Hockey Player; Featured on "Heated Rivalry"
Harrison Browne Biography
Harrison Browne is a Canadian LGBTQ activist, author, actor, and filmmaker who first gained recognition as a professional ice hockey player. Browne received a scholarship to Mercyhurst University and made his NCAA debut before transferring to the University of Maine, where he developed his skills as a forward. Before his professional career, Browne represented Team Canada at the U18 Championship in Stockholm, earning a silver medal. Browne signed a professional contract with the Buffalo Beauts of the National Women’s Hockey League (NWHL), competing for both the Beauts and the Metropolitan Riveters during his professional tenure.
In October, Browne publicly came out as a transgender man, becoming the first openly transgender athlete in professional American hockey. He stated that he would not hormonally transition until the end of his professional playing career, as the hormones involved in female-to-male gender transition violate anti-doping regulations. Browne became the first openly transgender athlete in North American professional hockey and the first to have his chosen name and pronouns on official score sheets. During his time in the NWHL, he helped develop the first transgender policy in professional sports, was appointed Inclusion Leader for the NWHL advisory board, and served as a special ambassador for the National Hockey League's Hockey Is For Everyone initiative. The Hockey News named Browne one of hockey's 100 Top People of Power in recognition of his advocacy.
Browne won the Isobel Cup with the Buffalo Beauts, becoming the first openly transgender athlete to win a national championship in a team sport. He later came out of retirement to join the Metropolitan Riveters, playing a key role in the team's 12-game winning streak and contributing to another Isobel Cup victory, making him only the second player to have his name appear twice on the trophy.
After retiring from professional hockey, Browne transitioned to a career in film and television, focusing on LGBTQ representation and storytelling. He appeared in episodes of both "Y: The Last Man" and "Murdoch Mysteries," as well as in the mystery drama series "Nancy Drew." Browne wrote, directed, and starred in the short film "Pink Light," which premiered in the Short Cuts program at the Toronto International Film Festival. He also appeared in the Canadian LGBTQ+ hockey romance series "Heated Rivalry."
Browne and his sister Rachel co-authored the non-fiction book "Let Us Play" about transgender inclusion in sports. In "Let Us Play," Browne and investigative journalist Rachel Browne examine how opposition toward gender-diverse athletes is driven by fear and moral panic rather than facts. The book has received positive reviews, with Kirkus Reviews describing it as "a strong argument for dismantling gender segregation in sports." Through his athletic achievements, advocacy, literary work, and screen presence, Browne is recognized as a leading voice at the intersection of sports, identity, and inclusion.
