Seattle-Based Funk & Soul Band; Billboard No. 1 R&B Album Artists; Acclaimed Live Performers
The Dip Biography
The Dip is a Seattle-based funk and rhythm and blues band known for music that draws from vintage soul, classic pop storytelling, and jazz improvisation. The group formed when Jarred Katz, Mark Hunter, and Tom Eddy, who shared a house near the University of Washington, joined forces with the Honeynut Horns—Brennan Carter, Evan Smith, and Levi Gillis—who lived nearby and played jazz on their balcony. The two groups merged to form The Dip, initially performing at house parties and providing jazz students an outlet for more mainstream music.
Featuring a three-piece horn section, the band's sound reflects early soul and funk influences while incorporating jazz elements. Alongside singer and guitarist Tom Eddy, bassist Mark Hunter and drummer Jarred Katz contribute to both tight grooves and free improvisation. Trumpet player Brennan Carter and saxophonists Evan Smith and Levi Gillis serve as melodic counterpoints, complementing Eddy's vocals and shaping the band's distinct sonic identity.
The Dip has built a grassroots fan base through energetic live shows and a strong work ethic, translating their performances into self-produced albums such as their self-titled debut, "The Dip," and "The Dip Delivers." "The Dip Delivers" was recorded in a studio the band constructed themselves and was followed by the instrumental EP "The Dip Plays It Cool." The band has been recognized by KEXP as one of the most exciting and joyous acts to emerge in recent years, steadily growing their following through extensive touring and dynamic stage presence.
A significant milestone in the band's career came with their signing to Dualtone Records and the release of the single "Paddle to the Stars," followed by the full-length album "Sticking With It." "Sticking With It" reached No. 1 on the Billboard Current R&B Albums Chart, enhancing the band's national profile. The album cycle included headlining and sold-out shows at venues such as the Fillmore San Francisco, Brooklyn Steel, and the Showbox Market in Seattle, as well as supporting Lake Street Dive and The Black Pumas and performing at major festivals including Bonnaroo and Outside Lands.
The band's fourth studio album, "Love Direction," was recorded at Seattle's Avast! Recording Studios and Los Angeles' 64 Sound, with audio engineer Josh Block contributing to the production. Featuring guest musicians, the 11-song collection highlights The Dip's signature driving sound and explores themes related to relationships. With a catalog that includes soulful originals, chart-topping albums, and a reputation for memorable live performances, The Dip is recognized as a leading act in contemporary rhythm and blues, funk, and soul music.
