Jaquelyn H. Berry Biography

Dr. Jacquelyn H. Berry is a cognitive scientist specializing in learning, expertise, and human-computer interaction. Berry is the first person of color to earn a doctorate in cognitive psychology from the University at Albany in New York. She previously attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where she earned a Bachelor of Science, Master of Business Administration, and Master of Science. Her research focuses on how gaming can inform learning, using the video game Tetris as an experimental platform.

Berry is a former Fulbright U.S. Scholar who developed new experimental psychology techniques in an Egyptian population. After post-doctoral research in learning and expertise, she joined The American University in Cairo as a Fulbright U.S. Scholar, where she used video games to study interface switching in Arabic-English bilinguals. While in Egypt, Berry taught courses on the science of expertise and supported students in achieving diverse personal goals, such as completing triathlons, mastering musical instruments, learning new languages, and improving physical fitness. She later returned to The American University in Cairo as a faculty member, continuing her research on cognitive function in bilinguals and older adults.

At the American University in Cairo, Berry established the first experimental psychology laboratory in Egypt, collecting extensive research data across multiple experiments and platforms, including eye-tracking and artificial intelligence. She has also conducted research on astronaut health and performance, examining how cognition and decision-making can be supported during spacewalks. In addition to her academic work, Berry is a technology entrepreneur focused on expertise development. She is a founding member of AI for Afrika and has presented her work on technology and language at the United Nations.

Berry is the author of "Find Your Carrot," a motivational book that provides strategies for personal organization and self-fulfillment. The book became a bestseller on Amazon and has been translated into Arabic. "Find Your Carrot" encourages readers to pursue meaningful goals rather than focusing on fear-based motivation. Berry is also developing a follow-up book, "Find Your Currency." She regularly speaks at graduations, corporate conferences, and motivational events, sharing insights from cognitive science, psychology, and technology.
