Tony Pérez Soto Biography

Anthony Ramón Pérez Soto, widely known as Tony Pérez Soto, is a Costa Rican climate activist, Indigenous rights advocate, and community organizer whose work focuses on environmental justice, decolonization, and migration. A descendant of the Chorotega and Huetar Indigenous groups in Costa Rica, Pérez Soto grew up with an awareness of the impacts of human-caused climate change. His family's matrilineal structure influenced his early understanding of gender inequalities in a national context that often favors men over women. Pérez Soto became involved in climate activism after attending high school in Germany, where sustainability is central to the curriculum.

Pérez Soto earned a bachelor's degree in political science and German from Luther College in Iowa, where he engaged in campus organizing and advocated for equity. He contributed to developing a new academic curriculum at Luther College, mobilizing students, organizing public forums, and petitioning for the inclusion of content highlighting Black and Brown experiences across disciplines. Pérez Soto also led the International Student & Allies Association and Latines Unides, a student organization focused on the Latinx experience in the United States and abroad. He later completed a master's degree in applied diplomacy with a concentration on migration at DePaul University in Chicago.

On the global stage, Pérez Soto is recognized for his advocacy of Indigenous-centered climate justice. He spoke at the Extinction Rebellion rally on loss and damage in Glasgow during the COP26 climate summit, emphasizing the importance of centering Indigenous experiences in climate change discussions. Pérez Soto has addressed the environmental consequences of infrastructure projects and agricultural exports, such as pineapples, coffee, and bananas, which have contributed to deforestation, water pollution from pesticides, and the displacement of Indigenous peoples. He is a proponent of the land back movement, advocating for the return of land to Indigenous peoples and the inclusion of their voices in decisions regarding social investment, infrastructure, and public policy.

Pérez Soto serves as regional programs director at Earth Guardians, an intergenerational climate justice organization that trains youth leaders in the climate movement through art, music, storytelling, civic engagement, and legal action. Through the Earth Guardians Speakers' Bureau program, Pérez Soto amplifies youth voices at events, conferences, and educational institutions, promoting action on ecological issues. He has delivered keynote addresses at events such as the Decorah Pride Parade and participated in panel discussions on decolonization, including an event for EarthHacks.io featuring youth leaders from Earth Guardians. Pérez Soto's multilingual abilities, developed through work with immigrant communities in Germany, Italy, the Dominican Republic, and the American Southwest, have enabled him to provide services such as nutrition assistance and translation for asylum and refugee applications. Through advocacy, scholarship, and public speaking, Pérez Soto connects frontline Indigenous communities with the global climate movement.
