Katie Niemeyer Biography

Katie Niemeyer is a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), entrepreneur, philanthropist, and professional speaker whose journey from surviving Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) to founding a business has established her as a voice in the medical and entrepreneurial communities. Niemeyer became a nurse after surviving SJS, inspired by the nurses who cared for her during her illness, and now works as a nurse anesthetist.

At age 16, Niemeyer experienced a severe reaction to a new medication, resulting in a diagnosis of Stevens-Johnson Syndrome. She was hospitalized with second- and third-degree burns and given a 50 percent chance of survival. Niemeyer survived the ordeal but continues to manage lasting health effects, including severe sensitivity and scarring to her eyes that impact her daily life.

The concept for "Handana," an absorbent wristband for workouts, originated while Niemeyer was training for a marathon. She developed Handana as an alternative to traditional cotton wristbands, creating a sweatband made from Lycra fabric that wraps around the hand and allows users to wipe sweat from their eyes, nose, neck, or forehead. Handana is used by runners, cyclists, and athletes in yoga, spin class, CrossFit, kickboxing, and other sports. The product was the first runner-up in the Under Armour Future Show, received media coverage from Steve Harvey, and was utilized in medical research by the Cleveland FES Center, a consortium of medical institutions.

Niemeyer has donated proceeds from her business to support research in the treatment of acute and chronic SJS eye disease and established the Katie Niemeyer Research Fund at Massachusetts Eye and Ear. She also founded SJ Syndrome of Texas, a foundation dedicated to raising funds and awareness for SJS research. The organization works to increase awareness, understanding, and treatment of SJS.

Niemeyer regularly shares her story with healthcare and general audiences nationwide, educating and providing insight to the SJS/TEN community and beyond. Drawing on her patient experience and healthcare career, she delivers presentations to medical professionals and audiences seeking strategies to overcome challenges. At the World Orphan Drug Congress, Niemeyer spoke about her experience with SJS/TEN and continues to focus on topics such as the power of individual action, empathy, and kindness in healthcare and patient advocacy.
