Dr. Angelo Volandes Biography

Angelo E. Volandes, MD, is a physician, researcher, and patients' rights advocate focused on transforming end-of-life care in the United States. Volandes serves as a professor of medicine at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth and vice chair of research at Dartmouth Health. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from Harvard College, a medical degree from Yale School of Medicine, and a master's in public health from the Harvard School of Public Health. After medical school, Volandes completed a residency in internal medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, followed by fellowships in medical ethics at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital.

Volandes' career centers on empowering patients and families to make informed medical decisions. He is recognized for his expertise in video decision support tools, decision science, and medical ethics. Volandes leads a group that develops video support tools to inform patients about their medical care options. His research has received support from organizations including the National Institutes of Health, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Alzheimer's Association, the Betty and Gordon Moore Foundation, the Stupski Foundation, and the Melik-Baschkopf Foundation. Volandes' work has contributed to the adoption of digital media decision aids in clinical care delivery and advanced the scientific rigor of shared decision-making research through the development and dissemination of digital interventions for patients and families across the care continuum.

Volandes co-founded ACP Decisions with Aretha Delight Davis to provide evidence-based video media that support patients and families in making informed medical decisions. As co-founder and president of Advance Care Planning (ACP) Decisions, a nonprofit foundation, he focuses on implementing systems and technologies to improve the quality of care in the healthcare system. Volandes co-led the "Advance Care Planning: Promoting Effective and Aligned Communication in the Elderly" (ACP PEACE) trial, an NIH Collaboratory study, and serves as the Anna Gundlach Huber Professor in Medicine at the Geisel School of Medicine and co–principal investigator for ACP PEACE.

Volandes is the author of the book "The Conversation: A Revolutionary Plan for End-of-Life Care," which explores the experiences of patients facing end-of-life decisions and emphasizes the importance of communication between patients, families, and clinicians. The book has been noted for its impact within the medical community and beyond.

Volandes has received honors such as the Goldman-Berland Lectureship from Providence Health Care System, the Clinician Researcher of the Year award from the Society of General Medicine, the Sabra M. Woolley Memorial Award from the National Health Literacy Research Conference, and the Merck/AGS New Investigator Award. He was also named the Edmond J. Safra Faculty Fellow at the Harvard University Center for Ethics.
