Education Innovator & Social Entrepreneur; Co-Founder of Guild; Executive Board Chair at Guild; Forbes 30 Under 30 in Education
Rachel Romer Biography
Rachel Romer is a social entrepreneur and education innovator recognized as the co-founder of Guild, a Public Benefit Corporation that has influenced how major U.S. employers approach workforce development. Romer co-founded Guild with Brittany Stich after researching low graduation rates among working adults. While pursuing her MBA, Romer focused on identifying accessible, high-quality educational institutions and explored why these schools were not serving the 88 million working adults in need of upskilling and reskilling, which led to the founding of Guild.
Guild is a social impact company that provides American workers with opportunities for personal and professional advancement through education, skill-building, and coaching. The company partners with Fortune 1000 employers, including The Walt Disney Company, Walmart, Pepsi, Chipotle, Target, Hilton, and Macy's, to enhance their education and upskilling programs using Guild's technology platform, payments system, and learning marketplace. Under Romer's leadership, Guild achieved a multibillion-dollar valuation and has been recognized by TIME as one of its Most Influential Companies, by CNBC's Disruptor 50, LinkedIn's Top Startups, and received Fast Company's World Changing Ideas award.
Before launching Guild, Romer founded Student Blueprint and worked for the Obama campaign before serving in the Obama White House. She holds an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business, as well as an MA in Education and a BA in Political Science from Stanford University. Romer has been included in Forbes 30 Under 30 in education and was named EY Entrepreneur of the Year for the Mountain Desert region.
Romer experienced a stroke at age 34, which required multiple brain surgeries and an extended period of rehabilitation. She has spoken publicly about her recovery and the impact of the stroke, noting that her left-handedness aided her communication abilities during recovery. During this period, Guild expanded its upskilling programs for health care workers, and Romer engaged with nurses about their work experiences. She returned to public speaking at the Fortune Most Powerful Women Summit, discussing leadership during crisis with Guild's CEO Bijal Shah.
Romer serves as executive board chair of Guild while continuing her recovery. She is a trustee for the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee and a board member of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. Romer's experience in entrepreneurship, workforce development, and navigating health challenges positions her as a prominent voice on the future of work and economic mobility.
