James H. Lambright Biography

James H. Lambright is a public finance leader with experience in government, investment banking, and sustainable energy. Lambright holds a law degree from Harvard Law School and a bachelor's degree in linguistics from Stanford University, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.

Earlier in his career, Lambright served as vice president of private equity for Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette, an investment banking firm later acquired by Credit Suisse. He was appointed chairman and CEO of the U.S. Export-Import Bank, where he managed a $60 billion credit portfolio with exposure to more than 150 countries and led the transformation of the Ex-Im Bank into a self-financing institution. Lambright also participated in the initial meetings of the U.S.-China Strategic Economic Dialogue, engaging with global economic policy and international finance.

During the financial crisis, Lambright served as chief investment officer of the U.S. Treasury Department's $700 billion Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP), chairing the TARP Investment Committee and overseeing more than 600 investments in financial and automotive companies, including AIG, Citigroup, and GM. He maintained his leadership role at the Ex-Im Bank during this period and facilitated the transition to the next administration.

After his government service, Lambright held executive roles at Sapphire Energy, a biofuels development company, and Sempra Energy, where he oversaw mergers and acquisitions and corporate strategy. He is a Professor of Practice at UC San Diego's School of Global Policy and Strategy, focusing on international business, finance, and government. Lambright is a Henry Crown Fellow of the Aspen Institute and serves on the board of PeacePlayers International, a nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C. His career encompasses global economic policy, government intervention in markets, and sustainable finance.
