Mark Brezzell M.S C.P. Biography

Mark Brezzell is a former Cardiovascular Perfusionist who practiced at Toledo Hospital in Toledo OH. He has participated in well over 2000 Open Heart Surgical procedures during his 10 year tenure. While there he specialized in Blood Conservation and Bloodless Surgery management. He has been invited to speak at many National Scientific Venues. He holds a B.S. in Biology Pre-Medicine from Oakwood College (Oakwood University a HBCU), located in Huntsville, AL. He received his Graduate training in Clinical Cardiovascular Perfusion Sciences from Johns Hopkins, School of Perfusion Sciences located in Baltimore MD. While there, Brezzell specialized in Cerebral Blood Flow Research as well as the study of Artificial Blood use in Cardiac Surgery.

He has the honor of being their first African American to graduate from the program. He completed a three year internship in Genetic Toxicology at the University of Michigan, College of Pharmacy where he co-authored four technical publications. As of today, Brezzell is an Executive Medical Science Liaison for Terumo Medical Company, mentor and teacher and Medical Affairs professional in the Biotech and Medical Device Industry. Brezzell remains very active in community health activities. He has a passion to educate people on the synergistic component of health via the Eight laws of Health. Stress kills but we can reduce our stress by following these key principles. We can do better.

My objective is to highlight how whichever biotech career path you choose, there are skills you will need that aren’t necessarily found in the classroom: for example:

    • "It’s not enough to be a technical whizz", but you must be a team player.
    • No matter what your position in biotech, good communication is a key asset and may be something you will have to cultivate on your own.
    • Networking will be a critical element in landing a key job. If you are not sure what type of position would best suit you, speak to people in the industry.
    • Finally as you matriculate in whatever your area of interest, take a business or marketing class to facilitate your understanding of the business side of the science. This will give a leg up in the recruitment process.
