Cheri C. Garcia Biography

Cheri Garcia is a nationally-recognized recovery advocate, investor, and expert in second-chance hiring. She consults with companies ranging from small businesses to Fortune 500 corporations on second-chance hiring and diversity initiatives.

For more than a decade, Garcia has worked to help formerly incarcerated people and those in recovery find meaningful full-time jobs. In 2016, she launched Cornbread Hustle, Inc., the first staffing agency focused on second-chance job opportunities. Cornbread Hustle has placed more than 2,500 eager workers in jobs around North Texas and the U.S.

In 2021, Garcia was recognized as Social Innovator of the Year by United Way of Metropolitan Dallas. She was named to the D CEO 40 Under 40 list that year. Other honors include a 2017 Resolution in the Texas House of Representatives, honoring Cheri for her work with formerly-incarcerated people.

In 2022, Garcia created the 12-Week Starting Over Program, an interactive video series available to inmates in prisons nationwide.

Garcia unashamedly shares her struggles with addiction to methamphetamine and alcohol, and how she overcame these challenges to serve and inspire others. She is also an investor in recovery-focused businesses owned by people who have overcome their own addiction issues.

    As an executive and working professional, I encountered many struggles in my sobriety journey. With this presentation, I speak openly and frankly about how I became addicted to drugs and alcohol; how addiction harmed my family and work life; and how I started on the road to recovery.

    My company, Cornbread Hustle, provides job opportunities for people returning from incarceration, those with criminal records, and people in recovery from substance use disorder.

    One of the obstacles we often face when talking with employers is the fear they have over offering jobs to people who are formerly incarcerated or recovering from addiction. In this talk, I share my own deeply personal experiences with drugs and alcohol, and the surprising things I've learned from employing convicted murderers, sex offenders, and former gang members.

  • Success is Not Linear

    After I quit using meth, I tried to find personal success and fulfillment through a series of increasingly complex adventures. I literally talked my way into not one but two TV news jobs, without a college degree. I invented, manufactured, and sold a self-tanning product. I worked for billionaire Dallas Mavericks owner and Shark Tank producer Mark Cuban. I ran a PR agency. I started my own staffing agency. But I was doing all of this without confronting my own traumas, and while self-medicating with alcohol and other substances.

    It wasn't until I learned to let go of the bottle and rely on myself and my faith that I discovered success is not a linear progression of steps to be followed and achieved. Only once I came to these realizations and learned to love myself did I find true happiness, health, and financial success. In this presentation, my audience will learn:
