Daniel Durant Biography
Daniel N. Durant is a stage and screen actor known for his contributions to Deaf representation in entertainment. Deaf since birth, Durant's breakthrough role was as Moritz Stiefel in the Broadway revival of "Spring Awakening." He moved to Los Angeles to join the Deaf West Theatre production of "Cyrano," which launched his professional acting career. Durant also played the lead role of Charlie in Deaf West's production of "Flowers for Algernon."
Durant played the co-lead role of Moritz in the Deaf West production of "Spring Awakening," which opened at the Rosenthal Theatre and later moved to the Wallis Annenberg Theatre in Beverly Hills before his Broadway debut at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. His performance received positive reviews from The New York Times, National Public Radio, BBC, and other media outlets. He earned several awards and recognitions for the role, including the Theatre World Award for Outstanding Broadway Debut Performance, Broadway.com's Top 10 Show-Stopping Performances of the season, Huffington Post's Top 10 Best Theatrical Performances, and Theatremania.com's 12 Best Broadway Debuts. On television, Durant had a recurring role in ABC Family's "Switched at Birth," playing Matthew, and co-starred in its Peabody Award-winning episode titled "Uprising."
Durant had a major supporting role in the Academy Award-winning film "CODA." His portrayal of Leo Rossi, the protective older brother in a deaf family, contributed to the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture and helped "CODA" become the first film with a predominantly deaf cast to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. Durant and the "CODA" cast also received the Sundance Special Jury Award for Best Ensemble. He has appeared in the second season of Netflix's "You" and starred in the series "Florida Man."
Durant performed the National Anthem in American Sign Language at Super Bowl LVIII. His film "Silent Notes," in which he plays a recently deaf man who becomes a courier for the mob to earn money for a cochlear implant, premiered at the Austin Film Festival. Durant earned Best Actor at the Manchester Film Festival for his lead role in the crime thriller. He was also cast in the ASL-infused revival of "American Idiot," presented by Center Theatre Group and Deaf West Theatre. The production became the highest-grossing musical at the Mark Taper Forum.
In addition to performing, Durant is an advocate for the Deaf community and an active public speaker. His work includes co-leading acting workshops for Deaf students, teaching and coaching at Deaf film camps, and conducting national speaking engagements at colleges and universities. He was recognized as the Deaf Awareness Month Honoree for the City of Los Angeles for his contributions to the arts and the Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities. Through his performances and advocacy, Durant supports authentic Deaf representation on stage and screen.
