John-Michael Lander Biography

John-Michael Lander is a former Olympic diving contender, author, actor, speaker, and victim advocate whose athletic career included competing for the United States in international springboard and platform diving events. Lander gained national attention by placing eighth at the Junior Olympics in diving and qualifying to compete in Denmark, Norway, and Canada. He went on to win gold medals at the Norway and Danish Cups.

As a 14-year-old Olympic-bound athlete, Lander endured sexual abuse from coaches, benefactors, and medical professionals, leading to years of PTSD, depression, anxiety, and suicide attempts. One of the adults involved in his training was Dr. Strauss at The Ohio State University, a central figure in a major abuse scandal in American higher education involving male athletes. Lander has used his experiences to raise awareness about sexual abuse and trafficking in sports and education, sharing his story through the platform "An Athlete's Silence."

Lander is the founder of An Athlete's Silence, an organization dedicated to helping others identify signs of grooming and abuse through writing, speaking, and consulting. He developed the Predatory Grooming Trifecta, a model illustrating how predators groom organizations, parents, and then children, often remaining undetected for years. As a certified trainer and life coach with the Self-Talk Institute, Lander works with teams, organizations, and schools to promote mental health, self-talk strategies, and abuse prevention. He has presented programs including "Are Your Thoughts Killing You," "The Predatory Grooming Trifecta," "The Predatory Internet Grooming (PIG)," "Locker Room Talk," and "Change the Myths—Change Your Life."

Lander's advocacy and expertise in athlete safety, trauma recovery, and abuse prevention have been featured in Time Magazine, USA Today, CBC Canada's Canada Tonight, Safe Sports International, and The National Coalition to End Sexual Exploitation Global Summit. He contributed to the creation of the Athletes' Bill of Rights and participated as a discussion panelist for the Netflix film "Athlete A." Lander was interviewed by George Clooney's production company for a documentary examining a university sex abuse scandal and serves as a board member of the Army of Survivors. He has delivered the speech "An Athlete's Silence" at TEDxDayton and the Coalition to End Sexual Exploitation Global Summit in Washington, D.C.

Lander's published works include the novels "Surface Tension," "Cracked Surface," and "Shattered Surface," which explore the impact of sexual abuse on individuals pursuing careers in the entertainment industry. His entertainment credits include performances on "General Hospital," "All My Children," national commercials, and leading roles in the independent films "All the Rage" and "Pilgrim." Through his work in athletics, advocacy, literature, and entertainment, Lander provides education and support for survivors of abuse, focusing on prevention, healing, and awareness in sports and beyond.
