Aviv Regev Biography

Aviv Regev is an Israeli-American computational and systems biologist whose work integrates mathematics, computer science, and molecular biology. Regev's research centers on gene-regulatory networks, single-cell genomics, and the application of machine learning to biology and drug discovery. She has developed experimental and computational approaches in single-cell genomics, establishing methods for identifying cell types and states, reconstructing cellular organization in tissues, and studying gene-regulatory circuits at single-cell resolution. Her methods combine mathematics and computer science to enable the discovery and characterization of the trillions of cells within the body, advancing the understanding of disease mechanisms and supporting the development of diagnostics and therapies.

Before moving to industry, Regev held academic positions including professor of biology at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, core member and chair of the faculty at Broad Institute, founding director of the Klarman Cell Observatory, and investigator at Howard Hughes Medical Institute. She has contributed to the development and application of single-cell and spatial genomics for constructing tumor atlases, conducting the first single-cell genomics study of a solid tumor (glioblastoma) and the first single-cell study of a full tumor ecosystem (in melanoma). Her laboratory has identified previously unknown cells involved in healthy tissue and diseases such as cancer, ulcerative colitis, Alzheimer's disease, cystic fibrosis, and COVID-19. Regev co-founded the Human Cell Atlas with Sarah Teichmann, an international initiative to create comprehensive reference maps of human cells, which has become a significant resource in biomedical research.

Regev became Executive Vice President of Genentech Research and Early Development (gRED), leading all aspects of Genentech's drug discovery and development activities. She developed the "Lab in the Loop" approach, which iteratively combines large-scale biological experiments with machine-learning models to guide experiments and drug discovery. Artificial intelligence now contributes to all of Genentech's antibody programs, with one oncology program achieving 25 percent faster lead optimization and generating novel chemical scaffolds.

Regev is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Medicine, and American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a fellow of the International Society of Computational Biology. Her honors include the ISCB Overton and Innovator Prizes, Paul Marks Prize, Lurie Prize in Biomedical Sciences, Keio Medical Science Prize, HFSP Nakasone Award, L'Oréal-UNESCO for Women in Science Award, NIH Director's Pioneer Award, and the Earl and Thressa Stadtman Scholar Award from the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Regev has delivered keynote addresses at scientific conferences including the American Association for Cancer Research and NVIDIA GTC, sharing insights on AI-driven drug discovery, genomics, and biomedical innovation with audiences in the life sciences and pharmaceutical industries.
