Integrative Biology Professor & Environmental Toxicology Researcher; Judy Chandler Webb Distinguished Chair at UC Berkeley; Elected Member of the National Academy of Sciences
Tyrone Hayes Biography
Dr. Tyrone B. Hayes is a professor of integrative biology at University of California, Berkeley, and a researcher specializing in endocrine disruptors and environmental toxicology. Hayes holds the Judy Chandler Webb Distinguished Chair for Innovative Teaching and Research and serves as associate dean for diversity, equity and inclusion at UC Berkeley. His research centers on the role of steroid hormones in amphibian development, with a focus on metamorphosis, sex differentiation, immune function, and hormonal regulation of reproductive behavior.
Hayes and his laboratory identified that atrazine, a widely used herbicide and common water contaminant, acts as an endocrine disruptor that chemically castrates and feminizes amphibians. His peer-reviewed studies report that atrazine induces gonadal abnormalities, including hermaphroditism and demasculinization, in amphibians at concentrations as low as 0.1 parts per billion, levels below regulatory thresholds. This research has contributed to the understanding of amphibian population declines and has been supported by findings in other species, including fish, birds, reptiles, and mammals.
Hayes previously consulted for the chemical company Novartis, which later became Syngenta Crop Protection. After encountering resistance to his findings regarding atrazine's effects, he resigned and published his work independently. His research has been featured in publications such as New Yorker and Mother Jones, and he was the subject of a mini-documentary directed by Jonathan Demme. In his TEDxBerkeley talk, "Endocrine Disruption, Environmental Justice, and the Ivory Tower," Hayes discusses his experiences with Syngenta and highlights the disproportionate impact of environmental contaminants on socioeconomically disadvantaged and minority communities.
Hayes has presented numerous papers and seminars on the role of environmental contaminants in global amphibian decline and their links to health disparities in minority and low-income populations. He is the subject of the children's book "The Frog Scientist" and is recognized with honors including the E.E. Just Award, the E.O. Wilson Award from the Center for Biological Diversity, election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences, and the Rodale Institute Organic Pioneer Award. Hayes integrates scientific research, environmental justice advocacy, and public engagement to address the effects of chemical pollution on wildlife and human health.
