Karen Palmer Biography

Karen Palmer is an award-winning XR creator and futurist who explores the implications of AI and technology on societal structures and the impact of inequality. Coined the "storyteller from the future", her immersive experiences enable participants to experience the future today.

Palmer creates films that watch you back using artificial intelligence and facial recognition technologies, where the narrative branches in real time depending upon the participant's eye gaze and emotions. Through the immersive experience, participants simultaneously experience surveillance technologies, their potential integration into the everyday world around us, and how that could be used to impact societal structures, human rights, and civil liberties, as well as the impact on the participant to understand their role, agency, and autonomy within this future world. Palmer strives to make participants more self-aware and conscious of the fact that how their feelings, fears, and thoughts affect the narrative of the film, will affect the narrative of their life in the exact same way.

Palmer recently won the coveted XR Experience Competition at SXSW 2023 with her film "Consensus Gentium." It is a powerful exploration into the implications of today's AI technology, an immersive experience designed to drive discussion about data privacy, unconscious biases, and the power of technology. It transports audiences on a unique quest to discover what could come about if we succumb to unchecked surveillance.

A TED speaker and an inspiring thought leader in AI, immersive storytelling for impact, futurism, and technology for more than a decade, Palmer has been the opening keynote speaker at international conferences and festivals, including AT&T Shape, Wired for Wonder and TEDx Australia, the Netherlands Film Festival, the Future of Storytelling in NYC, and the "Living Among Intelligent Machines" AI Conference in Germany. She has also facilitated keynotes and workshops for organizations and corporations such as Microsoft, MIT, Vertex, ThoughtWorks, and Google, and worked closely with British Councils in Canada, Western Balkans, South Africa and Peru. Her groundbreaking work has been featured on Channel 4 News, BBC, CBS News, and published in Wired Magazine, Forbes, PC Mag, Fast Company, Engadget, and The Guardian.

Palmer has been a research-based artist working with artificial intelligence since 2015. Her "Hack the Future" Labs, created in 2020, are think & action tanks at the intersection of Art, Film, Neuroscience, Technology, Activism, Social Justice, Spirituality, and the Parkour Philosophy of Moving through Fear. Her work creates interdisciplinary conversations and discussions to enable explorations of solutions for urgent issues impacting this rapidly changing society.

Previously, Palmer received an Honorary Mention for the STARTS Prize ARS Electronica for "Perception iO," the future of law enforcement. In 2017, her installation "RIOT" was acknowledged as one of the Digital Dozen Award for breakthroughs in storytelling.
