Julian C. Chambliss Biography

Julian C. Chambliss, Ph.D., is a scholar, curator, and public intellectual whose work focuses on the intersection of history, popular culture, and community engagement. He is Professor of English and the Val Berryman Curator of History at the MSU Museum at Michigan State University. Chambliss examines real and imagined spaces, including urban planning, community development, comic books, and popular culture, to analyze how perceptions influence policy and action in shaping collective urban experiences. An interdisciplinary scholar, he has developed museum exhibitions, curated art shows, and created public history projects that explore community, ideology, and power in the United States.

Chambliss previously served as Professor of History at Rollins College before joining Michigan State University. He coordinated the Africa and African-American Studies Program at Rollins. At Michigan State, he is the faculty lead for the Department of English Graphic Possibilities Research Workshop and a core participant in the College of Arts & Letters Consortium for Critical Diversity in a Digital Age Research. Chambliss designs digital projects that use the classroom as a platform for students to act as co-researchers, tracing community development, documenting diverse experiences, and exploring culture.

Chambliss has published books, essays, and digital projects. He is co-editor and contributor for "Ages of Heroes, Eras of Men: Superheroes and the American Experience," a book examining the relationship between superheroes and American society. His book "Assembling the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Essays on the Social, Cultural, and Geopolitical Domain" analyzes the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His essays on comics have appeared in "More Critical Approaches to Comics" and "The Ages of Black Panther." His reader "Mapping Afrofuturism: Understanding Black Speculative Practice" explores Afrofuturism theory and practice. His writing has also appeared in American Historical Review, Phylon, Frieze Magazine, Rhetoric Review, and Boston Review.

His exhibition for the MSU Museum, "Beyond the Black Panther: Visions of Afrofuturism in American Comics," explores Afrofuturist-themed comics in the United States. Another exhibition, "Techno: The Rise of Detroit's Machine Music," examines the origins and evolution of techno music in Detroit through an Afrofuturist perspective. Chambliss is the host, writer, and creator of the podcast "RISE: Detroit's Machine Music." He is also a producer of "Every Tongue Got To Confess," a podcast exploring the experiences and stories of communities of color.

Chambliss serves on the steering committee for HASTAC (Humanities, Arts, Science, and Technology Alliance and Collaboratory), as a national planner for the Zora Neale Hurston Festival of the Arts and Humanities, and as a board member for the Society for City and Regional Planning History and the Comics Studies Society. He has been recognized for his community engagement work with the Rollins College Cornell Distinguished Service Award and the Florida Campus Compact Service Learning Faculty Award. Chambliss's career demonstrates the impact of public scholarship in examining the complex relationships between race, space, and culture in the United States.
