Lulu Garcia-Navarro Biography
Lulu Garcia-Navarro is a two-time Peabody Award-winning journalist whose career spans international conflict reporting and prominent roles in American media. Garcia-Navarro began her journalism career as a freelance reporter for BBC World Service and Voice of America, covering assignments in Cuba, Syria, Panama, and several European countries. She later joined Associated Press Television News as a producer and worked in the agency's radio division, reporting from Kosovo, Colombia, Afghanistan, Israel, and Iraq. Garcia-Navarro was among the few journalists to cover the Iraq invasion as a unilateral reporter.
Garcia-Navarro joined National Public Radio as Mexico City bureau chief, later overseeing NPR's Iraq coverage in Baghdad, serving as Jerusalem bureau chief, and opening NPR's Brazil bureau. She was one of the first reporters to enter Libya following the Arab Spring uprising, providing in-depth coverage of the conflict. For her reporting on the Arab Spring, Garcia-Navarro received a George Foster Peabody Award, a Lowell Thomas Award from the Overseas Press Club, an Edward R. Murrow Award from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and the Gracie Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement from the Alliance for Women and the Media.
Garcia-Navarro served as host of National Public Radio's "Weekend Edition Sunday," becoming the first Latina to lead a flagship NPR program. Her contributions to NPR News reporting on Iraq were recognized with a Peabody Award and an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Silver Baton. She has also received awards for coverage of migration in Mexico and the Amazon in Brazil, and her team earned a Gracie for reporting on the #MeToo movement.
Garcia-Navarro joined The New York Times to host "First Person," a New York Times Opinion show exploring how individuals form their beliefs. She later became co-host, with David Marchese, of the New York Times podcast "The Interview," which features guests interviewed twice over the course of a week. In this role, Garcia-Navarro has interviewed figures including Vice President JD Vance and Miley Cyrus. She is also an on-air contributor to CNN. Garcia-Navarro holds a Bachelor of Science degree in international relations from Georgetown University and a Master of Arts degree in journalism from City University in London.
