Award-Winning Investigative Journalist & National Security Expert; Former Senior Correspondent at CBS News & Fox News; Author of "The Next Wave"
Catherine Herridge Biography
Catherine Herridge is an Emmy Award-winning investigative journalist with more than four decades of experience covering national security, intelligence, and government accountability. She earned a bachelor's degree from Harvard College and a master's degree in journalism from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. At Columbia, Herridge sits on the alumni board and established a national security reporting scholarship. Initially a London-based correspondent for ABC News, Herridge joined Fox News Channel at its inception. At Fox News, she served as chief intelligence correspondent, covering the intelligence community, the Justice Department, and the Department of Homeland Security, and was the first cable TV correspondent assigned to the DHS beat.
Throughout her career, Herridge has reported on significant national and international security stories, including the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the military trials for the alleged suspects at Guantanamo Bay, Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russia report, and the House impeachment proceedings. She is among the few reporters to have sat in the same military courtroom as Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and his four alleged co-conspirators. During the Benghazi attack, Herridge was first to report there was no demonstration at the consulate when the attack unfolded. Her coverage of the Benghazi scandal earned her the Reed Irvine Award.
Herridge is the author of "The Next Wave: On the Hunt for Al Qaeda's American Recruits," a book that examines the post-9/11 threat of homegrown terrorism, the role of social media in digital jihadist movements, and the influence of Anwar al-Awlaki. She later joined CBS News as a senior investigative correspondent. Her reporting there contributed to legislative change affecting more than a million American veterans and civilians. The Investigative Unit's Emmy-nominated series "Decades of Exposure," which investigated toxic water at Camp Lejeune, is credited by activists and lawmakers with the passing of the Camp Lejeune Justice Act as part of the PACT Act, impacting nearly a million veterans, their families, and civilians.
Herridge's journalism has earned her numerous honors. The Congressional Medal of Honor Society awarded her its annual Tex McCrary Award for excellence in journalism. She also secured first place in the Kevin Carmody Award for Outstanding Investigative Reporting from the Society of Environmental Journalists for the series "Toxic Legacy," and her work on "Fox Files" was recognized with the Bronze World Medal from the New York Festivals. Beyond her broadcast work, Herridge is a prominent voice on press freedom and the First Amendment. She was held in civil contempt by a U.S. federal court for refusing to disclose her confidential sources for a series of national security stories, a stand that has positioned her as a key figure in national conversations about the protection of journalists and their sources. Herridge continues her mission to hold powerful institutions accountable through rigorous, independent investigative journalism, including through her own media outlet, Catherine Herridge Reports.
