Steve Winter Biography
Steve Winter has been a photographer for National Geographic for over two decades. He specializes in wildlife, and particularly, big cats.
Steve is a Nat Geo Explorer, BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year, and BBC Wildlife Photojournalist of the Year. He was a two-time winner of Picture of the Year International’s Global Vision Award and won 1st prize in the Nature Story category from World Press Photo in 2008 and 2014.
Steve frequently gives presentations and lectures on photography and conservation across the world. He has appeared on 60 Minutes, CBS Nightly News, NPR, BBC, CNN, NG WILD and other media outlets. He has filmed numerous shows for the National Geographic Channel and Nat Geo Wild, including Earth Live, Tigers, and two Mission Critical films: Saving the Leopard and Jaguars versus Crocs for Nat Geo WILD’s Big Cat Week.
In November 2013, National Geographic published Steve’s photography book Tigers Forever: Saving the World’s Most Endangered Cat. In December 2019, National Geographic published “The Tiger Next Door” which showcases Steve’s photography on the captive tiger industry in the United States.
Steve feels that he has a great responsibility not only to educate an audience on big cats but also to inform viewers about the integral link between these majestic mammals and conservation. To quote Steve, “If we can protect the wide-ranging, large, iconic species like big cats that require huge tracts of land to survive—who live in ecosystems that are vital to the survival of all life on earth—we can help save ourselves.”
