Yuval Levin Biography
Yuval Levin is a conservative public intellectual and serves as the director of Social, Cultural, and Constitutional Studies at the American Enterprise Institute, where he also holds the Beth and Ravenel Curry Chair in Public Policy. Levin is the founding editor of National Affairs, a quarterly journal focused on domestic policy, political economy, society, culture, and political thought. He is a contributing editor at National Review and a contributing opinion writer at The New York Times, engaging both scholarly and general audiences on issues related to American democracy and public policy. Levin holds a doctorate from the University of Chicago's Committee on Social Thought.
Before his work in policy research and journalism, Levin gained experience in government, serving as a special assistant to the president for domestic policy on the White House domestic policy staff under President George W. Bush. He was also executive director of the President's Council on Bioethics, advising on the moral and policy implications of advances in biotechnology. Levin's government service includes roles as a congressional staffer at the member, committee, and leadership levels, providing insight into the legislative process and policy implementation.
Levin is the author of six books on political theory and public policy, examining the health of American democracy and its institutions. His works include "Tyranny of Reason," "Imagining the Future: Science and American Democracy," "The Great Debate: Edmund Burke, Thomas Paine, and the Birth of Right and Left," "The Fractured Republic: Renewing America's Social Contract in the Age of Individualism," and "A Time to Build: From Family and Community to Congress and the Campus, How Recommitting to Our Institutions Can Revive the American Dream." Levin has discussed these topics on PBS programs such as "Amanpour & Company" and "Firing Line with Margaret Hoover."
Levin's book "American Covenant: How the Constitution Unified Our Nation — and Could Again" explores America's civic divisions and the Constitution's role in addressing political polarization. The book has been featured at the Library of Congress National Book Festival. Levin has delivered remarks at institutions including the University of Tennessee Baker School of Public Policy and Public Affairs and participated in American Enterprise Institute's semiquincentennial series on the American founding. His work has been recognized with the Bradley Prize for intellectual achievement. Levin's essays and articles have appeared in The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, The New York Times, Commentary, and other major publications, contributing to ongoing discussions on political theory, constitutional studies, and American public policy.
