Charlotte Ayanna Biography
Charlotte Ayanna was born in Puerto Rico to Emma Lopez, a schizophrenic alcoholic, her father abandoned the family before her birth. Emma traveled to Vermont where she gave birth to Diana. She and Ayanna were severely neglected and malnourished, living in an apartment unsupervised and hungry, resorting to eating lead paint chips off the walls. During a winter blizzard neighbors found Ayanna and Diana walking barefoot in their diapers. Ayanna’s journey through foster care began that day. She remained lost in the system for the next 16 years, living in 13 foster homes that exposed her to physical, mental and environmental abuse. Ayanna packed two garbage bags when she was 14, voluntarily moving into a group home for Children in Crisis where she lived with 53 boys and girls who had a history of mental, sexual, physical abuse, rape victims, runaways, incest victims and thieves. In a final plea, Ayanna wrote a letter to her social worker asking to help her to find a family. As a result, Jill Charles, the creative director of the prominent Dorset Theater was introduced to Ayanna and adopted her when she was 17. On a $100 bet, Ayanna made history winning the Miss Teen USA pageant wearing a $37.99 dress, traveling the US and many foreign destinations speaking to thousands of people while finishing her studies. She published her first book with Simon & Schuster, Lost In The System, a chronicle of her life in foster care. A highly successful national tour for the book’s release followed where she received numerous awards for her advocacy. She shared a platform with AG, Janet Reno, testifying to the US Congress, and lobbied the Vermont legislature with Bernie Sanders.
Ayanna’s mission is to raise awareness about foster children and others less fortunate, inspire them to rise above traumatic backgrounds and embrace their courage to pursue a life of possibilities and dreams. Her successful career as a film actress, starring alongside Ethan Hawke, Denzel Washington, Hugh Jackman, Adrien Brody, and Ron Perlman, provides her with a benevolent spotlight to bring attention to these goals. She is in the final stage of completing her second non fiction novel, exploring a history of the highs and devastating blows of living with untreated PTSD for the majority of her life, where she has worked to overcome these challenges to be reborn free of phantoms that sometimes overwhelmed and derailed her potential. Her message of truth, hope and inspiration addresses those who question their capacity to overcome self imposed or inherited adversities, and to those who have achieved great success, to remind them how important it is to give back to the community and inspire those who are weak and without hope. Encourage people to understand the lower you fall, the higher you can rise. What one may consider to be the end can in fact, be a new beginning. No matter who you are or what your circumstances, you can achieve anything if you believe in yourself and have faith in a higher force that is always available to you through daily practice of work, prayer, meditation and positive interaction with your contemporaries.
