 Bob Valvano Biography

Bob Valvano joined ESPN in December 1998 as an ESPN Radio host. Today he serves as a game analyst for ESPN and ESPN Radio’s college basketball coverage.

Valvano is also the veteran television and radio voice for the University of Louisville men’s basketball team. Valvano coached basketball for 19 seasons before entering broadcasting full time. He successfully rebuilt four different college programs, setting all-time records for wins in a season at three different colleges (Kutztown University, Catholic University and St. Mary’s College). He also served as head coach in the professional league in Sweden, where his team won two cup championships in international tournaments.

Valvano-coached teams set more than 15 college records and six NCAA records, which in additional to the season-season win records mentioned about, were for 3-point field goal shooting proficiency.

At the time of his hiring at St. Francis (N.Y.), he was the youngest Division I head coach in the country at 27 years old.

He is the author of a well-received biography about his brother Jim Valvano, The Gifts of Jimmy V, and is an in-demand motivational speaker who has delivered his theme of “Making a Difference” to more than 200 schools and businesses across the country.

Valvano lettered in soccer, basketball and golf at Virginia Wesleyan College, and was named All-Conference First Team, and soccer MVP in 1978. He was named Outstanding Senior Athlete, and was inaugurated into the college’s inaugural class of its Athletic Hall of Fame. He is a cum laude graduate of Wesleyan where he majored in Communications.

Bob serves on the Board of Directors of both the V Foundation for Cancer Research, and has served as Chairman of a celebrity bocce tournament that benefits the V Foundation and the James Graham Brown Cancer Center.
