Ron Stallworth Biography

Ron Stallworth is a retired law enforcement veteran known for his undercover work in policing. Stallworth was the first African American detective in the Colorado Springs Police Department, where he began his career at age 22 as the youngest detective assigned to the intelligence section of the narcotics unit. Throughout his career, he worked undercover in narcotics, vice, criminal intelligence, and organized crime across four states.

Stallworth is recognized for infiltrating the Ku Klux Klan in Colorado Springs. After responding to a classified ad for the local Klan chapter, he initiated an undercover investigation by corresponding as a white man seeking membership. His partner, Chuck, attended in-person meetings, while Stallworth managed phone communications. The investigation disrupted cross burnings, identified white supremacists in the military, and contributed to national security efforts. This operation is regarded as one of the most successful undercover investigations in U.S. law enforcement history.

After retiring from the Utah Department of Public Safety, Stallworth published "Black Klansman," detailing his undercover investigation of the Klan. The book reached the top of the New York Times Best Sellers List. The film adaptation, "BlacKkKlansman," received the Grand Prix Award at the Cannes Film Festival, won Best Adapted Screenplay at the Academy Awards, and earned multiple nominations at the Academy Awards and Golden Globe Awards.

Stallworth is also the author of "The Gangs of Zion: A Black Cop's Crusade in Mormon Country," which explores his work addressing gang activity and civic issues in Utah. Hulu and 20th Television have developed a TV series adaptation of this memoir, titled "Hip Hop Cop," depicting Stallworth's undercover work during the rise of rap and hip hop in the 1990s. His additional works include "Bringing the Noise: Gangster-Reality Rap and the Dynamics of Black Social Revolution" and "Gangsta Code: The Sociological Implications of Gangster Rap Music and Hip Hop Culture."

Stallworth has received several honors, including the Outstanding National Leadership Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Gang Crime Research Center. His media appearances include interviews with MSNBC, CNN, NPR, BBC, and Vice Magazine. Stallworth continues to engage audiences on topics such as race relations, law enforcement, and criminal justice, offering perspectives on the evolving dynamics between policing and communities in America.

During the months-long investigation, Stallworth sabotaged cross burnings, exposed white supremacists in the military, and even befriended and served on the security detail for David Duke. In this talk, Stallworth tells the story of his KKK infiltration, touching on his motivations, doubts, fears, and triumphs throughout the process.
