Tracy Letts Biography

Tracy Letts is a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and Tony Award-winning actor known for his significant contributions to American theater, film, and television. Letts has developed a reputation for exploring the darker aspects of the American experience through his work. He began his acting career at Steppenwolf Theatre and has been a member of the Steppenwolf Theatre Company ensemble, appearing in productions such as "The Pillowman," "Glengarry Glen Ross," and "Three Days of Rain."

As a playwright, Letts gained early recognition with the plays "Killer Joe" and "Bug," which were produced in Chicago, London, and New York. His play "Man from Nebraska," staged by Steppenwolf, marked a shift in his thematic focus and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. Letts achieved widespread acclaim with "August: Osage County," which premiered at Steppenwolf Theatre and later ran on Broadway at the Imperial Theatre. The production received multiple Tony Award nominations, winning Best Play, and earned Letts the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. "August: Osage County" also had a sold-out engagement at London's National Theatre and toured nationally in the United States. Letts has been a Pulitzer finalist for both "Man from Nebraska" and "The Minutes," the latter recognized for its incisive depiction of American civic life.

Letts's acting career includes a Tony Award-winning performance in the Broadway revival of Edward Albee's "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" at the Booth Theatre. He also starred in the Broadway production of "The Minutes," marking his first time acting in one of his own plays. On television, Letts portrayed CIA Director Andrew Lockhart on Showtime's "Homeland," with the cast earning a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for Best Drama Ensemble. He played Jack McKinney in the HBO series "Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty," a role that led to a Primetime Emmy Award nomination.

In film, Letts has appeared in several Best Picture Oscar-nominated movies, including "The Big Short," "The Post," "Lady Bird," "Ford v Ferrari," and "Little Women." He portrayed Henry Ford II in James Mangold's "Ford v Ferrari" and received recognition for his role opposite Saoirse Ronan in Greta Gerwig's "Lady Bird," which was named one of the Top Ten Films of the year by the National Board of Review and nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Ensemble. As a screenwriter, Letts adapted his plays "Bug," "Killer Joe," and "August: Osage County" for film.

Letts's plays often examine characters grappling with moral and spiritual dilemmas, and his experience as both a writer and performer informs his approach to storytelling. His work addresses themes such as family dysfunction, institutional corruption, and moral ambiguity, establishing Letts as a prominent voice in contemporary American drama.
