Ruben Santiago-Hudson Biography

Ruben Santiago-Hudson is a Tony Award-winning actor, playwright, director, and screenwriter recognized for his versatility in American theater and entertainment. Santiago-Hudson has received national awards for his work in acting, playwriting, and directing. He has appeared on the New York stage in several significant productions, including as Buddy Bolden in the musical "Jelly's Last Jam," as Canewell in August Wilson's "Seven Guitars," for which he received a Tony Award, and in the title role of "Henry VIII" for the New York Shakespeare Festival.

Growing up as one of only 200 Black students in a high school of 1,700, Santiago-Hudson faced racism and was discouraged from pursuing certain roles due to his race. Despite these barriers, he attended college on scholarships and developed an interest in acting, ultimately becoming a prominent figure in American theater.

Santiago-Hudson starred as Captain Roy Montgomery in the ABC series "Castle" for three seasons. His film and television credits span a range of genres and include "East New York," "American Gangster," "Their Eyes Were Watching God," "Shaft," "Devil's Advocate," "Selma," "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks," "Billions," "The West Wing," and "Law & Order," among others. He also appeared in a PBS Nova documentary about chemist Percy Lavon Julian.

As a writer, Santiago-Hudson is known for his one-man show "Lackawanna Blues," in which he portrayed more than 20 characters, sang, and played the harmonica. With "Lackawanna Blues," he became the first person on Broadway to write, direct, and star in a play. The screenplay adaptation of "Lackawanna Blues" earned multiple awards, including the Humanitas Prize, National Board of Reviews, NAACP Image Award, and the Christopher Award, and received nominations for an Emmy, Golden Globe, and Writers Guild of America Award. Santiago-Hudson also adapted August Wilson's play "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" for Netflix, which was produced by Denzel Washington and earned him a Writers Guild of America Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.

As a director, Santiago-Hudson's Broadway production of "Jitney" received several awards for Outstanding Revival, including the Tony Award and six Tony nominations. His Broadway production of "Skeleton Crew" by Dominique Morisseau received four Tony nominations, including Outstanding New Play. He won the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Director, an Obie Award for Direction, and was nominated for the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Director of a Play for his work on the Off-Broadway production of August Wilson's "The Piano Lesson." Throughout his career, Santiago-Hudson has produced, directed, or acted in all of Wilson's plays and maintained a close personal friendship with the playwright. In 2026, he received a Tony nomination for his performance in "August Wilson’s Joe Turner’s Come and Gone."

Santiago-Hudson's honors include the Humanitas Prize, National Board of Reviews, Christopher Award, Clarence Derwent Award, Lucille Lortel Award, four Obie Awards, six Audelco Awards, Helen Hayes Award, NAACP Image Award, SDCF Joseph Calloway Directing Award, Lloyd Richards Directing Award, and the NAACP Lifetime Achievement Theatre Award. The Ruben Santiago-Hudson Fine Arts Learning Center in Lackawanna, New York, reflects his lasting impact on his hometown. Santiago-Hudson co-starred with Tom Hanks and Kelli O'Hara in the world premiere of "This World of Tomorrow," a science fiction love story adapted from two of Hanks' short stories and set at the 1939 New York World's Fair. He also lectures on theater at colleges and works as a private acting coach, contributing to the ongoing development of the performing arts community.
