Celebrity Chef & Restaurateur; Judge on Food Network's "Chopped"; Author of "Season with Authority"
Marc Murphy Biography
Chef Marc Murphy is a prominent figure in the New York City culinary scene, known for a career shaped by an international upbringing. The son of a diplomat, Murphy began his career in renowned kitchens across Paris and Monte Carlo. After training at the Institute of Culinary Education in New York, he refined his culinary skills under chefs such as Alain Ducasse, Terrance Brennan, Sylvain Portay, and David Pasternak. Early in his career, Murphy received a two-star review from The New York Times, establishing his reputation in the restaurant industry.
Murphy opened his first restaurant, Landmarc, in Tribeca, later expanding to the Time Warner Center. He went on to open Ditch Plains in the West Village, offering casual, beach-inspired cuisine including lobster rolls and fish tacos. Drawing on French technique, Italian influences, and New York sensibilities, Murphy has developed a diverse portfolio of restaurants. He oversees several concepts in New York, including The Mainstay by Marc Murphy, a Porchetta Sandwich Shop at Citi Field, the MM Kitchen Studio event space, and MARC179, a restaurant operating four days each month for specialty seasonal dinners.
Murphy serves as a judge on Food Network shows "Chopped" and "Chopped Junior," and has appeared on "Guy's Grocery Games," "Beat Bobby Flay," The Today Show, Good Morning America, and the Rachael Ray Show. He is the author of "Season with Authority: Confident Home Cooking" and hosts the "Food 360 with Marc Murphy" podcast. Fluent in four languages, Murphy incorporates French and Italian culinary traditions into his restaurant menus, reflecting his international background.
Murphy's work extends beyond restaurants and television. As part of the U.S. Department of State's Diplomatic Culinary Partnership, he has traveled internationally to promote American cuisine and culture. He has also worked with World Central Kitchen in Poland, preparing meals for Ukrainian refugees. Murphy is a former president of the Manhattan chapter of the New York State Restaurant Association, a Food Council and board member of City Harvest, and a member of the Leadership Council for Share Our Strength's No Kid Hungry campaign. As an ambassador for Braintrust, he advocates for education access for children with learning disabilities, drawing from his own experiences with dyslexia. Murphy's career encompasses culinary leadership, food media, and civic engagement within the restaurant industry.
