Food Innovation Entrepreneur, Co-Founder & CEO at Banza; Creator of Chickpea Pasta; Forbes 30 Under 30 in Food
Brian Rudolph Biography
Brian Rudolph is the co-founder and CEO of Banza, a food brand recognized for introducing pasta made from chickpeas. The concept for Banza originated from Rudolph's personal experience with wheat intolerance, leading him to develop chickpea pasta in his Detroit apartment. He refined the recipe through experimentation and collaboration with his brother, Scott Rudolph, resulting in a product composed primarily of chickpeas, along with tapioca, pea protein, and xanthan gum. Banza pasta offers higher protein and fiber content compared to traditional wheat pasta.
The Rudolph brothers debuted their product on the show "Restaurant Startup," which provided initial funding and exposure. After overcoming early production challenges, including a failed large-scale batch, Brian Rudolph worked extensively in a Michigan factory to perfect the manufacturing process. The company secured additional funding through crowdfunding and investment from "Restaurant Startup" investor Joe Bastianich.
Banza has received recognition from TIME Magazine as one of the Top 25 Inventions, won the first prize in Accelerate Michigan's pitch competition, and has been included in Forbes' 30 Under 30 in Food, Crain's Detroit 20 in Their 20s, and Entrepreneur of the Year by Michigan State University. The company has also been named one of Fast Company's Most Innovative Companies in food and recognized as one of TIME100's Most Influential Companies. Banza has raised significant growth funding from investors including Enlightened Hospitality Investments and Prelude Growth Partners.
Initially focused on high-protein, plant-based pasta, Banza has expanded its product line to include pizza, rice, and waffles. Its products are available in more than 25,000 retail locations, including Target, Whole Foods, and Costco. Rudolph began his career in Detroit as a Venture for America Fellow and was the first employee at the startup Quikly. He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Emory University. Rudolph is featured in the documentary "Generation Startup," which chronicles the experiences of Venture for America Fellows building startups in Detroit. He has shared insights on entrepreneurship, consumer packaged goods, and brand development on platforms such as "Good Morning America," "How I Built This with Guy Raz," and at industry events including the Fancy Food Show.
