Paul Mason Biography
Paul Mason is a British journalist, author, broadcaster, and political consultant recognized for his extensive coverage of economic and political affairs. Mason began his career as BBC Newsnight's business correspondent, making his first live appearance during the September 11 attacks, and later served as the program's economics editor. He went on to become Culture and Digital Editor at Channel 4 News before taking on the role of Economics Editor. In these positions, Mason received several honors, including the RTS Specialist Reporter of the Year and the Wincott Award.
Mason's journalism extends beyond studio reporting. He has covered major global events such as the global financial crisis, Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, the Taksim Square uprising in Turkey, the Gaza War, and the rise of Xi Jinping at the Congress of the Communist Party of China. Mason has been shortlisted for the Orwell Prize twice, and his reporting on China's economic ascent earned him the Wincott Award for Business Journalism. He also received the Diageo African Business Reporting Award and was named Royal Television Society's specialist reporter of the year for his coverage of the economic crisis and social unrest in southern Europe.
As an author, Mason has written several books, including "Rare Earth: A Novel," "Why It's Kicking Off Everywhere," "Postcapitalism," "Clear Bright Future," and "How To Stop Fascism: History, Ideology, Resistance." His book "How To Stop Fascism" examines the rise of the modern far-right, its impact on conservatism, and the challenges it poses to democracy. In "Reds," Mason explores the origins and failures of communism. As a filmmaker, Mason created the four-part documentary series "#ThisIsACoup," which investigates the Greek financial crisis, and "K is for Karl," a series marking the anniversary of Karl Marx's birth.
After transitioning to freelance work, Mason has contributed columns to The Guardian, The New Statesman, The New European, Frankfurter Rundschau, and Social Europe. He regularly appears on UK television and radio as a commentator on politics, economics, and geopolitics, including on LBC's CrossTalk, BBC Question Time, BBC Politics, and BBC Broadcasting House. Mason has also focused on national security and defense, serving as the Aneurin Bevan Fellow in Defence and Resilience at the Council on Geostrategy and co-authoring the report "Securonomics: The Contribution of a Defence Industrial Strategy." He holds the position of Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the University of Exeter's Centre for the Public Understanding of Defence and Security.
