Ian McKellen Biography
Sir Ian McKellen is a British actor whose career spans more than six decades across stage, film, and television. McKellen has played roles in genres ranging from Shakespearean drama and modern theater to fantasy and science fiction, and has been knighted by Queen Elizabeth II. He has received numerous accolades, including a Tony Award, six Laurence Olivier Awards, an Actor Award, and a Golden Globe Award, as well as nominations for two Academy Awards, five BAFTAs, and five Emmy Awards.
McKellen made his stage debut at the Belgrade Theatre as a member of its repertory company and earned both popular and critical recognition for his performances as Richard II in Shakespeare's "Richard II" and Edward II in Marlowe's "Edward II" at the Edinburgh Festival. He became a key figure at the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre of Great Britain.
His theatrical work includes roles such as Richard II, Macbeth (with Judi Dench), Coriolanus, Iago, Richard III, and King Lear. McKellen appeared in the first production of Martin Sherman's "Bent" and in premieres of plays by Arnold Wesker, Peter Shaffer, Michael Frayn, Alan Ayckbourn, and Mark Ravenhill. He received the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play for his role as Antonio Salieri in "Amadeus." McKellen was the first actor to top The Stage 100 list of most influential people in British theatre, following his UK tour and West End run of "Ian McKellen on Stage."
On screen, McKellen is known for roles such as King Richard III in "Richard III," James Whale in "Gods and Monsters," Magneto in the "X-Men" films, Cogsworth in "Beauty and the Beast," and Gandalf in "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" trilogies. He received Academy Award nominations for his performances in "Gods and Monsters" and "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring." His television work includes the comedy "Vicious," in which he and Derek Jacobi played a gay couple. McKellen led the cast of "The Christophers" alongside Michaela Coel, Jessica Gunning, and James Corden; the film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and received a high approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Beyond his artistic achievements, McKellen is a prominent LGBTQ+ advocate. He publicly came out as gay during an interview on BBC Radio, marking a significant moment for LGBTQ+ representation in the arts. McKellen is a co-founder of Stonewall, an LGBT rights lobby group in the United Kingdom, and serves as patron of LGBT History Month, Pride London, Oxford Pride, GAY-GLOS, LGBT Foundation, and FFLAG. He has continued his advocacy despite discouragement from peers, remaining a leading voice for LGBTQ+ rights in the entertainment industry. His legacy includes both his contributions to theater and film and his ongoing commitment to equality and LGBTQ+ visibility.
