Kim Ghattas Biography
Kim Ghattas is an Emmy Award-winning journalist, analyst, and author with more than 20 years of experience covering the Middle East, international affairs, and U.S. foreign policy for BBC and other print and broadcast media. Ghattas began her journalism career as an intern at the English-language newspaper The Daily Star in Beirut, before reporting for Dutch newspaper de Volkskrant, Financial Times, and BBC, covering the Middle East from Iraq and Saudi Arabia to Syria and Lebanon. She was part of an Emmy Award-winning BBC team covering the Lebanon-Israel conflict.
Ghattas served as BBC's State Department correspondent, traveling regularly with the U.S. Secretary of State. During that time, she traveled with Secretaries of State Condoleezza Rice, Hillary Clinton, and John Kerry. This access informed her debut book, "The Secretary," an inside account of Hillary Clinton's tenure as Secretary of State. "The Secretary" became a New York Times bestseller.
Ghattas is also the author of "Black Wave," an analysis of the Saudi-Iran rivalry that was named a New York Times Notable Book and has become a reference for universities and diplomats. "Black Wave" was shortlisted for the Cundill History Prize. Her third book, "The Best Kind of American," explores how events from the Iranian revolution and the Israeli invasion of Lebanon continue to influence the present day.
As a contributing writer for The Atlantic and a regular contributor to Financial Times, Ghattas provides analysis on Middle East politics, U.S. foreign policy, and global affairs. She is a regular guest on CNN, MSNBC, and NPR. Ghattas has served as a Distinguished Inaugural Fellow at the Columbia University Institute for Global Politics and as a public policy fellow at the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars. She served on the Board of Trustees of the American University of Beirut and sits on the board of directors of the Global Center for Pluralism and the advisory board of the Atlas for Impunity. Ghattas’s career spans broadcast, print, and long-form narrative, establishing her as a leading voice on the modern Middle East, international relations, and global policy analysis.
