Entrepreneur, Inventor & Educational Technology Leader; Co-Founder of Mystery Science; Former Product Manager at Facebook
Keith Schacht Biography
Keith Schacht is an American entrepreneur, inventor, and angel investor known for developing technology that supports children's education and exploration. Schacht began his entrepreneurial career by founding Lever Works, a custom software development company launched from his college dorm room. Lever Works created pre-built products for web design firms and was later acquired by Leo Media. Early in his career, BusinessWeek recognized Schacht as one of the top 20 entrepreneurs under 25. He co-founded Inventables, a subscription service connecting Fortune 500 companies with new materials and technologies to inspire product innovation, and delivered a talk on "Toys from the Future" at the TED Conference.
Schacht joined Facebook as a product manager, where he launched an updated version of News Feed and was named as an inventor on nine patents. Before Facebook, he founded Crafted Fun, a social gaming company that developed experiences for platforms such as Facebook; the company was acquired by Vying Games. These roles in product development, social platforms, and consumer technology informed his subsequent ventures in educational technology.
Schacht co-founded Mystery Science with Doug Peltz, creating open-and-go science lessons for elementary teachers. Mystery Science aimed to make science education accessible and engaging for elementary school students, emphasizing hands-on experiments and interactive learning. The platform became widely adopted in classrooms across the United States, used by more than 50% of elementary schools and reaching over 4 million children each month. The Wall Street Journal recognized Mystery Science as a leading resource for students during school closures.
Discovery Education acquired Mystery Science for $140 million, with Schacht listed as the majority shareholder at the time of acquisition. Following the acquisition, Schacht established The Explanation Company, focusing on creating video explanations to help children independently explore their questions. The Explanation Company's first product is "Lava," a browser and communications app designed for kids.
Schacht has invested in at least 25 private companies and numerous public companies, including Boom Supersonic, Credit Karma, Canva, AngelList, OpenGov, Square, Tesla, and Facebook, all prior to their initial public offerings. He has spoken at the TED Conference and has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Fortune, and Wired. As a serial founder with multiple successful exits, Schacht maintains a focus on children's education, educational technology, and fostering curiosity through innovative digital products.
